The @Winnipeg Jets have called two more to their hall.

The club announced on Friday that Jets 1.0 stars Thomas Steen and Randy Carlyle will be officially inducted on February 11, 2020 as the seventh and eighth members of the team’s Hall Of Fame. They will join Bobby Hull, Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson who were part of the first class of inductees back in 2016; Dale Hawerchuk who was the lone entrant in 2018; and Lars-Erik Sjoberg along with Ab McDonald who were added to the group last season.

The official induction ceremony will take place before the start of the Jets game against the @New York Rangers – a game that also features the return to Winnipeg of former Jets @Jacob Trouba and @Brendan Lemieux, so there should be plenty of emotion in the air that night. The Jets will also be wearing their blue heritage jersey for the third and final time that night.

A Hall of Fame Luncheon is planned to take place at the Fairmont Hotel following day.

 

Steen was selected in the fifth round of the 1979 draft but went on to have a 14 year NHL career, all with the Winnipeg Jets. When the team left south for Arizona, Steen retired and the final farewell ceremony in Winnipeg saw his number 25 raised to the rafters.

In 950 games played, Steen – who considered himself more of a playmaker on offense with an ability to play strong defense – scored 264 goals and 553 assists for 817 points.

Off the ice, he was instrumental in helping bring the AHL to Manitoba as he was part of a group that purchased the Minnesota Moose. He also took the lead in helping a handful of charities in the area and became more involved in local politics, running in federal and then local elections and ended up winning a seat on Winnipeg City Council in a 2010 municipal election. He has since worked for True North Sports + Entertainment in various capacities, including his current role in scouting and alumni relations.

 

Carlyle was drafted in the second round of the 1976 draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs and spent seven and a half seasons with the Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins – where he won the Norris Trophy in 1981 as the league’s top defenseman, as well as named to the NHL first all-star team – before coming to Winnipeg in a trade in 1984 in exchange for the Jets first round pick that year.

With the Jets he continued his strong defensive play but also picked up his offensive game, continuing to post career highs in goals and points seemingly year after year and he was named to the NHL All-Star Game two more times as a Jet both in 1985 and again in 1993. His time in Winnipeg was hindered by injuries – in his last four seasons his highest amount of games played topped out at 66 – and he finished his eight years in Winnipeg with a total of 564 games played with 80 goals and 306 points.

After retiring, Carlyle became an assistant coach for the Jets for the 1995-96 season, but didn’t follow the club to Arizona. He did though join the Manitoba Moose coaching staff as both an assistant and head coach in two separate stints.
