It was a game that turned out exactly how we thought it would.
The Jets traveled to Edmonton with all of four or five regular NHL players with the rest of the lineup looking more like what we’ll see in the AHL, and while they hung around ok for the first couple of periods, they ended up being no match for the Oilers who iced a regular lineup and played the heck out of Connor McDavid in a lopsided 7-3 preseason game.

SCORING SUMMARY

HIGHLIGHTS

First Period

The Oilers dominated play for a good portion of a penalty filled first frame but Eric Comrie held his ground pretty well. The Oilers did get a 1-0 lead on a nice rush by Jesse Puljujarvi on the power play that was defended poorly by Joe Morrow and Logan Stanley

Second Period

The Oilers took a 2-0 lead early in the second as a Logan Stanley turnover (he really had a bad game tonight) led to a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal. The Jets did rally though with a nice individual effort by Marko Dano and then a very nice sequence of passing between Brandon Tanev, Josh Morrissey and Andrew Copp that ended up giving Adam Lowry an easy tap-in to tie things up.
Another bad turnover and lazy defending helped the Oilers re-take the lead before the period ended.

Third Period

The Oilers top line continued to torch the Jets and their top defensive pairing of Trouba and Morrissey as McDavid sniped one and then set up two more as the Oilers busted things wide open in the third.
Sami Niku did provide a little bit of joy for Jets fans in that final period though as his heads-up slap pass to Copp was a thing of absolute beauty.

JN PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Andrew Copp – His pass to Lowry finished off a great passing drill for the Jets and his goal was more of a product of Niku’s amazing passing, but hey at least he finished it.
For Edmonton: Connor McDavid – What else is there to say? McDavid went all McDavid on the Jets tonight. Kinda funny that the Oilers played him so much – almost a minute more than any other forward on the ice – in a meaningless pre-season game though.

NEXT FLIGHT

Expect a whole different roster tomorrow night as the Jets “return home” (most of them already there as they didn’t travel to Edmonton) to take on the Calgary Flames. Puck drop at Bell MTS Place is 7 PM.
