Today’s matchup in the JetsNation Fan Favorite Tournament should be a good one as the ever popular Tie Domi takes on Ed Olczyk. “Edzo” comes into this as a clear underdog despite being the more prolific offensive player as Domi is not just one of the most popular Jets of all-time, but also had super memorable moments as a New York Ranger and Toronto Maple Leaf.

Ed Olczyk joined the Jets in 1990 as part of a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He spent a little over two seasons with the Winnipeg club picking up 66 goals and 142 points in 150 games in his first stint with the Jets. He was second on the team in scoring behind Phil Housley on the 91-92 squad that made the playoffs.

The season after that, he Eddie was traded to the New York Rangers and in return, the Jets got back Kris King and Tie Domi.

Domi joined the Jets in December 1992 and scored three times while picking up 249 penalty minutes in 49 games played. The following season he led the entire NHL in penalty minutes with 347 – many of those minutes racked up through fighting majors and misconducts as Tie dropped the gloves with any and all challengers. He added eight goals and 19 points that season as well which only helped cement his cult favorite status in Winnipeg.

Domi was then traded to Toronto on April 7, 1995 for Mike Eastwood and a third round pick. On that same day, the Jets re-aquired Eddie Olczyk back from the New York Rangers for a fifth round pick.

Olczyk then closed out the final season with the Jets were he sent off the team with one final impassioned speech at a farewell rally, famously shouting that in the event the relocated Jets won the Stanley Cup, it would make it’s way back to Winnipeg.

In fact, Olczyk didn’t follow the Jets to the Arizona desert as he signed with the Los Angeles Kings that summer.

Eddie O may have a bit of an uphill battle to climb going against the scrappy Domi, but will Ed’s epic speech in the Jets 1.0 goodbye to Winnipeg put him over the top?
