The Fan Favorite Tournament continues with a match up of 1.0 forwards. One was prolific in goal scoring while the other played his entire NHL career in Winnipeg and remained with the community well after the original Jets had moved on.

Brian Mullen was a seventh round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980 NHL Draft and made his debut with the jets two years later as he made the team out of training camp and had an impressive rookie campaign where he scored 24 goals and 50 points in 80 games played. In total, the durable and reliable Mullen played five seasons with the Jets, never below 50 points scored in a season and piling up 124 goals and 172 assists for 296 points. He was also a member of the US team in the 1984 Canada Cup and was a big part in helping the Jets reach the playoffs in all five seasons that he was in Winnipeg. His lone Jets highlight was a very memorable one as he scored a beautiful deflection OT winner in game one against the Calgary Flames in 1985 to help lead the Jets to a rare 3-1 series win.

The Jets traded Mullen to the New York Rangers in the summer of 1987.

Thomas Steen was also a low draft pick, selected in the fifth round of the 1979 draft but went on to have a 14 year NHL career, all with the Winnipeg Jets. When the team left south for Arizona, Steen retired and the final farewell ceremony in Winnipeg saw his number 25 raised to the rafters.

In 950 games played, Steen – who considered himself more of a playmaker on offense with an ability to play strong defense – scored 264 goals and 553 assists for 817 points.

Off the ice, he was instrumental in helping bring the AHL to Manitoba as he was part of a group that purchased the Minnesota Moose. He also took the lead in helping a handful of charities in the area and became more involved in local politics, running in federal and then local elections and ended up winning a seat on Winnipeg City Council in a 2010 municipal election. That run ended on a sour note though as he was charged with assault and uttering threats in what police then termed a “domestic incident” in May 2014. The chargers were stayed by the crown two years later with no real explanation given as to why, leaving a bit of a dark cloud over Steen’s otherwise spotless history in Winnipeg.

Thomas Steen is no stranger to the voting process and could be considered an incumbent in this race. Brian Mullen though has some fantastic numbers as a Jet to back him up.
