JN Recap – Jets Lay An Egg As They Get Goose Egged By Oilers

Given the big stage that this game was on today, a 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers feels like a massive kick in the gut to Jets fans, but I’m here to tell you it’s not all bad.
No really, this isn’t the end of the world. It’s not great either and there are major concerns (the power play, the fact the team has trailed to start the third period in all five games) but step back from the ledge and let me explain how things aren’t that bad.

GAME NOTES:

  • Full marks to Cam Talbot who came in and again – much like he did last season – stymied the Jets with every shot, especially in the first period when the Jets carried play and had the better scoring chances. Once the Oilers got a lead this game almost felt automatic as Cam was very good positionally
  • Also give credit to the Oilers defense which was very active in blocking shots and passes as well as cleaning up around the front of the net and making Talbot’s job a bit easier.
  • The Jets power play continues to be ugly and continues to force-feed the big blueline shot from Byfuglien with zero results to show for it and even worse it was a putrid second power play in the second period that led to the Oilers shorthanded goal from Mark Letestu and then a minute later as the Oilers penalty expired the Jets gave up a 2 on 1 with McDavid and Nurse that neither Enstrom nor Hellebuyck had a chance of stopping. Is it possible the power play this season is worse than the one they had last season? Kinda feels like it.
  • That 3rd goal against wasn’t much better. Laine with a bad turnover in his own end and compounded by a Zack Kassian shot that really should have been stopped by Helle. Not that it mattered at that point, but that 3rd goal did suck out whatever air the IGF crowd had for a potential 3rd period comeback.
  • The Oilers in the 3rd did very well to lock things down. The rest of the NHL should be scared if they can keep developing that ability.
  • Outside of the poor power play and turnovers, this really wasn’t that bad a game for the Jets…
It just feels worse due to the “importance” of this game.
  • Anyone else wonder if Paul Maurice goes to the line blender a little too quick at times? Maybe lines aren’t working out as well as they could (again they didn’t seem that bad in the first period, just void of scoring) but can we expect any continuity and chemistry if they keep getting yanked around at the first sign of issues?
  • Buff played more than 30 minutes again and it wasn’t as if he had an overly strong game. This can’t keep happening and as much as the Jets would like to “wait” for the perfect time to trade Trouba (or do anything with Trouba) doing something sooner rather than later would be ideal.
