It might be a good thing the @Winnipeg Jets moms are with them on this trip because they could use the love and support during what has been a disaster of a road trip so far. Another awful start puts the team behind very early in the game and they never recover in a 4-1 loss to the @Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. It’s now the Jets third loss in a row and fifth loss in their last six games.

Absolutely brutal start for the Jets who could ill-afford one after the last two games they’ve played.

The Hurricanes score 2:28 into the game when they take advantage of a poor line change and sleepy defending.

Three minutes after that, Sami Niku gets called for hooking and on the subsquent power play, the Hurricanes make it 2-0 on a shot that @Connor Hellebuck probably never saw.

It’s a little surprising at this point that no time out was taken to reset things for the Jets who looked all kinds of bewildered, but @Patrik Laine did help settle things down with a goal to get Winnipeg on the board almost a minute later.

There aren’t a whole lot of shots in the period – final tally was 8-6 in favor of the Canes. Patrik Laine was credited with five of those six shots for Winnipeg.

The Jets also couldn’t get out of the period without giving up one more goal on another Canes rush that the defense simply reacted very poorly to.

In a game where the Jets really needed to be ahead, or at least even, two goals down was a nightmare.

A better period for the Jets in that no goals were given up at least. The Jets also didn’t give up a shot on goal until the 14:55 mark of the period when the Hurricanes finally got a really god chance in close that Hellebuyck had to be alert on.

Despite the long time without a Canes shot, the final shots in the period ended up being 7-5 for the Jets. Carolina didn’t press for offense a whole lot, but also didn’t really give the Jets anything on the defensive end.

As multiple people suggested on Twitter, it felt like the Jets were defending a two goal deficit.

Here’s what you need to really know about the third…

The Jets were down two goals going into it. They only managed three shots the entire period.

Three.

Carolina scored in the fourth as @Justin Williams who two weeks ago wasn’t even an active member of the Hurricanes roster scored his second goal of the game.

The first two periods felt like a Jets team that was just going through the motions of a hockey game. The third period felt like a team that checked out. The sequence where @Mark Scheifele randomly swung at a puck in the air out of frustration while four other Jets just stood around watching the Canes pick up a couple of more scoring chances was a perfect example of a checked out team.

A very frustrating night for the Winnipeg Jets as they lose 4-1.

A very bad first period and an even worse third period book-end a rather pedestrian second period in a game where we expected to see a lot more from the visiting side, but never did as the Hurricanes were all too happy to use their speed to shut down and frustrate the Jets.

Connor Hellebuyck. Because he had to play behind all of that. No help from the defense, very little help from the forwards. All four Carolina goals came on his doorstep and he really didn’t have much chance on any of them.

 

Quick turnaround for the Jets as they’ll fly up to Columbus and take on the red hot Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena tomorrow night. The game will be on Sportsnet and TSN 1290.
