JN Flight Plan: Jets See San Jose For A Second Time In November

alt

27 days ago the Winnipeg Jets stole two points from the San Jose Sharks thanks in large part to a 51 save effort by @Connor Hellebuyck. Tonight they might need more of the same as the Sharks have been much improved this past month and have proven to be clutch with three overtime wins in a row.

Last Sharks Game

The Sharks got out to a 3-0 lead and looked safe and sound with nearly two periods done, but the Kings rallied for three of their own to force overtime. San Jose ended up with their third win in a row – all of which have needed overtime to be settled – as @Patrick Marleau scored the winner in OT.

Fun Sharks Facts…

  • So far in November at SAP Center, the Sharks are 6-3-0. Over San Jose’s last 10 games, the Sharks have improved to 9-1-0, which is the best record in the NHL over that span.
  • Entering tonight’s contest, Logan Couture is on a seven-game point streak (3g, 8a)
  • The Sharks currently own the best penalty kill unit in the NHL, killing off 91.4% of their disadvantages and are the only team above 90%. San Jose leads the NHL in home PK percentage (95.5%, 42-44) and are 87.8% on the road (43-49) which is tied for second in the NHL.
  • Defenseman @Marc-Edouard Vlasic can become the first San Jose Sharks blueliner to reach 1,000 games played with the franchise this season, needing only 10 games. He’s currently slated to become the 17th defenseman in NHL history to skate in at least 1,000 games with one franchise.

What They’re Saying…

With their over time win over the basement bound Los Angeles Kings last night, the San Jose Sharks have all but erased their brutal start to the season and find themselves sitting in the Western Conference’s second wild card spot. The race is not over by any stretch of the imagination, but as we’ve talked about in this space over the past month or so, the NHL’s point system makes gaining ground in the standings much harder than keeping it, so they’re finally in a good position going forward. With a win tomorrow against the visiting Winnipeg Jets, the Sharks could sit comfortably in a playoff position on the All Important Arbitrary Deadline of (American) Thanksgiving.

Hockey-Reference, using a separate model, also has a playoff prediction simulator that results in a similar story: a 36.0% chance for the Sharks to make the playoffs.
For a team that has made the postseason the previous four consecutive years, these playoff odds certainly aren’t where the Sharks expected to be almost a third of the way into the season.

Last Jets Game

A crazy Saturday night contest that saw four lead changes, some questionable officiating, some suspect rookie goaltending from Columbus and most importantly of all, a 4-3 win for the Winnipeg Jets over the Blue Jackets.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • Despite the fact that the Jets took a season-high five minor penalties on Saturday and gave their opposition a season-high five power plays, the Jets are averaging a league-low 5.0 penalty minutes per game. Overall Winnipeg has taken 53 minor penalties this season, which is the fewest in the NHL.
  • @Blake Wheeler is two goals shy of becoming the third player in franchise history to reach 200 goals with the Thrashers/Jets.
  • Nikolaj Ehlers (8G, 6A) and Mark Scheifele (4G, 10A) lead the Jets in scoring on the road with 14 points in 12 games. Ehlers’ eight road goals are tied for sixth in the NHL.
  • The Jets have points in five of their past six games (4-1-1) against the Sharks after losing the previous four meetings. Four of the past five games against San Jose have been decided by one goal.

What We’re Saying…

The Jets since that meeting with the Sharks on December 1 have become a somewhat better defensive team – at least compared to how they were at the end of October which granted isn’t saying much – so don’t expect the same level of domination from the Sharks at they had at the start of the month, but at the same time the Jets had better not count on the same inept play from Sharks defense and goalie Martin Jones who let in a handful of stinkers to practically hand the Jets the win.
