It’s not quite NHL playoff hockey in May or even AHL level playoffs in the spring, but Jets fans still have a chance to see a handful of Jets players as they play in the IIHF World Championships taking part this year in Cologne, Germany and Paris, France.
Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey, and Eric Comrie are all wearing the beloved red and white of Canada. Jacob Trouba, Andrew Copp, and Connor Hellebuyck make up another trio of Jets who are representing Team USA. Last but not least everyone’s favorite Great Dane, Nik Ehlers is skating for Denmark.
Here, we’ll recap the daily exploits of their teams and their individual performances:

TEAM CANADA GETS STARTED RIGHT

Canada didn’t have the smartest game against Czechs, but were clearly the better team overall in a 4-1 win to open play in the tournament.

Mark Scheifele assisted on Canada’s opening goal by Ryan O’Reilly and finished the game with that one helper and three shots on goal as he played on a top line with O’Reilly and Jeff Skinner.
Josh Morrisey saw time on the third defensive pairing with Mike Matheson and finished with one shot, one minor penalty in 15:19 of ice time.
Canada’s next action is against Slovenia on Sunday.

USA STUMBLES OUT OF THE GATE

Team USA for all intents and purposes were the better team against the co-hosts Germany, but couldn’t beat goalie Tomas Greiss in a 2-1 loss. Greiss posted a 42 save effort much to the delight of the home fans.

Jacob Trouba led all Americans in ice time logging in 24:05 while playing on a top pairing with Noah Hanifin and picked up three shots and a minor penalty. Andrew Copp played 10:39 on a third line with Jordan Greenway and Anders Bjork.
The Americans will look to get on the winning side of things and possibly with Connor Helllebuyck in goal against Denmark on Sunday.
