Jets Nation Recap: Taking Care of Business

The Winnipeg Jets started their four game road trip off right, spoiling John Tortorella’s first home game as head coach of the Blue Jackets. The Jets played a solid game and are back at it tomorrow in Montreal.
Lets take a closer look at the 3-2 win.

The first period
started off a little ho hum. Neither team looking too sharp with their
passing and, as a result, there were a tonne of turnovers.
Then the tide turned.
The Blue Jackets were caught in a poor line change and unable to stop Bryan Little streaking
in on the right wing. Little would then bury a slapshot into
Columbus’ net, top shelf. Myers later made a sweet play by intentionally shooting the
puck off the end boards, where Andrew Copp would gather
and score his very first NHL goal.
The Blue Jackets had
their first shot of the game after 8 full minutes of play.
Unfortunately, Peluso took a penalty and
immediately after the penalty expired Brandon Saad redirected a puck past
Pavelec. Bobrovsky struggled early, as was evident on the Jets’ 3rd
goal of the period when Wheeler snuck a puck in below the glove of
Bobo.
New goalie, same
Jackets. The Blue Jackets put Curtis McElhinney in net to start the
2nd. Both teams locked their games down, making the period
less wide open. The Blue Jackets were able to shut down the Jets
power play, resulting in some eggs on the powerplay in the second.
Tempers started to flair as we saw players taking liberties on the
other team with crosschecks and finally, Boll and Peluso dropped the
gloves and fought each other.
The 3rd
saw the Jets lock down the ice, playing quick and making good passes.
Maurice was even able to give the 4th line some ice time,
which is extremely important when playing the first game in a
back-to-back. In the last few minutes of the game, the Jets started
to sit back, which let the Jackets gain some zone time and score to
make the game 3-2.
The Jets would hold on and win the game.
THREE KEYS:
Special Teams: The
Jets took too many penalties again, 5 in total. However, their
penalty kill was able to bail each of the penalized players,
including a 4 minute double minor. The Jets were able to capitalize on their first powerplay, with a goal by Blake Wheeler.
1st Line
Power:
The line of Little, Ladd and Wheeler were excellent again
tonight. Little was 67% on the faceoffs and had 1 goal and 1 assist
on the night. The entire line combined for 5 points. Their possession
stats were stellar.
Penalties: The Jets have a problem. They are taking too many penalties. The Jets had 5 penalties tonight, one of which was a double minor. If they were playing any other team, the Jets would be in a lot of trouble. Hopefully they will learn to tone themselves down, without toning their game down.
