Jets Nation Recap: Hawks Shut Jets Out

Welcome to the
Friday night edition of your Winnipeg Jets. Tonight is a first for
rookie net minder Connor Hellebuyck as he is playing his first
back-to-back. Unfortunately, the Blackhawks’ would strike twice on the powerplay and see the Jets lose 2-0.

Lets take a look at
the game.

The Jets and Hawks
started off how hum, with the Jets holding the Blackhawks to 0 shots
for the first few minutes. Then, the Jets did the most Jets thing and
took a penalty. The ensuing Blackhawks powerplay would see Jonathon
Toews netting his 9th of the season.
The Jets and
Blackhawks were clearly both playing the 2nd game of a
back-to-back. Almost three quarters of the way through the second,
the Jets only had 11 shots on net. Penalties were a problem, again,
during the second for the Jets. This led to Patrick Kane scoring on the
man-advantage, which extended his point streak to 25 games.
The experience of
the Blackhawks showed against the Jets. They had their sticks in
lanes, deflecting shots and intercepting passes. On the powerplay,
the Blackhawks were able to score and when the Jets were on the
man-advantage, they looked sloppy and were unable to generate many
scoring chances.
The Jets had 29 shot
attempts through 2 periods, but only 12 shots on net.
The third period was
the best period for the Jets. They started to generate some offensive
zone time and make the Blackhawks feel worried about their 2 goal
lead. However, the Blackhawks would prevail, leading to a 2-0 victory
over the Jets.
The score could have been worse. Marian Hossa and Andrew Shaw both had break aways, but they were turned away by Hellebuyck.
As the holiday break
nears, the Jets will have some time to do some soul searching because tonight there was nothing that made the Jets look more than an average team. The
beginning of the 2015-16 season saw an exciting team play. Most
recently, we have only seen that Jets team in spurts. Hopefully, the
holidays will do the Jets some good.

3 KEYS
Special Teams: The
special teams were not so special for the Jets tonight. The
Blackhawks scored both of their goals on the powerplay, while the
Jets had 5 powerplays themselves and were unable to capitalize. The
Jets know they have to be more disciplined, but that has not shown.
Lack of Depth:
Remember when the Jets had Stempniak and Tlusty playing on the 4th
line because the Jets were so deep? Those were good times. Now, Adam
Lowry is playing crucial minutes in the 3rd and Chris
Thorburn is playing on the 3rd line.
Hellebuyck Time:
Despite losing, Connor Hellebuyck played an excellent game. The first
goal saw Tyler Myers go for a walkabout, leaving 3 Blackhawks between
him and the net. No chance for the rookie goalie on Toews’ goal.
Hellebuyck made timely saves to give the Jets a chance to get back in
the game, but was not rewarded for his play.
