The Jets put another solid performance together against a lowly opponent in the Edmonton Oilers Saturday afternoon. It was their third win a row under Coach Paul Maurice as he continues to become the most popular man in the city. Well, next to Jacob Trouba that is.

Things had the potential to be much more one sided for the Jets had they been able to connect on any of the set-ups they had in the first period. The puck was bouncing around and off of sticks on a regular basis in the first, and it took away a plethora of chances. When you look at the Fenwick chart from Saturday’s game, it’s clear the Jets were dominant from start to finish.

I’m really starting to like some of Paul Maurice’s decisions. He recognized how little Chris Thorburn was producing (and likely harming) with his stars in Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler, and responded by benching him in favour of Eric O’Dell. And you know what? It worked pretty well.

Zach Bogosian had one heck of a game. His play has continuously improved from the start of the season, which has really helped the Jets since Buff has moved to forward. Again, the opponents have been weak, but it’s nice to see him get some confidence with Enstrom.

I’ll admit, the Ladd-Little-Frolik line hasn’t gotten off to the greatest of starts. Their grouping looked great on paper, but they need to gel and get it together if they are to be kept as a grouping long term. I remain optimistic that they will figure it out, but they better do it quickly.

Remember that huge push we saw from the Jets with about 6-minutes left in the game as they tried to put it away? I’m just saying, Mark Stuart was in the penalty box the entire time.

If I have one concern about the Jets since Maurice has been around, it’s been the penalty kill. Teams have been putting up some big scoring chance numbers against the Jets, and they haven’t really changed much since his arrival. Yes, the Jets managed a short-handed goal against the Oil, but it remains a worry point for me.

The real tests start this week. The Jets have had a relatively easy run since Maurice took over, but now they head into a death trap in Anaheim, then the shark tank in San Jose, back home to face the suddenly hot again Leafs, before going right out again to face the Blackhawks in Chicago. If the Jets can take a couple of those games, I’ll be ready to fully buy into Paul Maurice.
