Pennants, scarves, and bobbleheads, three things that tend to gather dust and are also the three big things the Jets gave away at promotional games last year. The promotional game schedule is coming out soon and on it we’ll see a list of games that have something special given to the fans.
As far as hockey collectibles go, it’s a good bet that if you hit up the right game you could walk away with something that you or your kid will cherish for years. It’s also a good bet that you’ll get something that you’ll toss in your bag and forget about for weeks, if not months.
Bobbleheads are a great item that gets handed out and it’s even better when the whole arena gets one. Last year the Jets handed out Mark Scheifele bobbleheads and he even scored in OT that night. The only thing better than a bobblehead for a giveaway is a scarf. It’s practical and even if you don’t like it, it can be donated to someone in need.
The Jets used a silly video to advertise the bobblehead last year.
Pennants and cards are great, but depending on your work situation or how you have your home set up, they are items that are easily forgotten. Of course, there is nothing worse than promotional nights where there is nothing going on except a bit of history. Those types of games are advertised as promotional nights, but they’re not usually much fun. The exception to these being Hockey Fights Cancer and You Can Play nights. Those can be fun and tend to have auctions that go with them.
Personally, I’m a fan of themed nights like they do in the minor and junior leagues. Nothing is more fun than a teddy bear toss or a fun themed jersey for the game. Those events draw a crowd and a great atmosphere. Though, I wouldn’t say no to a bobblehead or two throughout the year and plan for them if I can.
