Winnipeg Jets re-assign 9 players, Roster now at 33

The Winnipeg Jets have re-assigned 9 players to the Manitoba Moose as the Jets inch towards assembling their roster for the 2016-2017 season. Eric Comrie, Kevin Czuczman, Scott Kosmachuk, Jan Kostalek and Jack Roslovic have been re-assigned to the Manitoba Moose. Pending waivers, JC Lipon, Brendan Kichton and Quinton Howden will join them as well at Moose training camp. Winnipeg also re-assigned 2016 first round selection Logan Stanley to junior to play the year out with his OHL club, the Windsor Spitfires.
What does this all mean for the Jets?
Analysis
- It’s no surprise Eric Comrie was the sole goalie re-assgined today. The three-way battle between Ondrej Pavelec, Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson isn’t going to solve itself in the near future and the Jets might even dip in to the season with three goalies on their roster.
- Scott Kosmachuk had a really strong showing at this years training camp. Kosmachuk recorded a goal and two helpers in the Jets 4-0 win against the Flames and didn’t look out of place whatsoever throughout camp. Kosmachuk finished a mere one goal shy of recording 20 goals last season with the Moose and that number will surely go up with the improved supporting cast he will have alongside him.
- Jack Roslovic looked really impressive in the young stars tournament and despite not making much of an impression in game action this pre-season, his skill-set was on full display at Jets practices and scrimmages. Roslovic was re-assigned to the Moose but has the option to be sent to junior in which he’d be assigned to the London Knights of the OHL.
Will the Jets lose someone to waivers?
For Quinton Howden, Brendan Kichton and JC Lipon, they’ll have to clear waivers before they can head to Moose training camp. What’s the likelihood one of them could be claimed off waivers?
- I think It’s unlikely Quinton Howden will get claimed, pretty lacklustre training camp for the Oak Bank Manitoba native.
- Brendan Kichton is a high-volume AHL scorer and while his prime years are seemingly in front of him, teams know he can produce at the AHL level but question marks surround him in the NHL ranks. Still it’s surprising Kichton was not given a more thorough look this pre-season, keeping Brian Strait and Julian Melchiori over him in this latest round of cuts.
- If I’m a team scoping the waiver wire, I’d snatch up JC Lipon. Lipon could be the leagues next best agitator with a rough around the edges game that team’s will always have a spot for. Instead of having a sort of Chris Thorburn player, Lipon presents a younger, more efficient and useful player in a similar capacity. It would be somewhat unfortunate if the Jets lost Lipon to waivers as he could have beat out Peluso and Thorburn for their role next season.
