Hockey is a weird sport. The Ducks and Jets have been two of the lowest scoring teams all season long but they treated everyone to a goalfest last night.

After an onslaught in the second period by Anaheim, the Jets pulled @Connor Hellebuyck out of the game and let @Laurent Brossoit see some action for the first time in a couple weeks. Let’s get into the details with the takeaways.

As mentioned above, Hellebuyck was removed from the game midway through the second period after he gave up five goals on only 19 shots. To be fair to Hellebuyck, there wasn’t much he could do on a few of those goals. They featured a high slot tip that went into the top corner, and a bizarre bounce off the midsection of @Derek Grant that fooled everyone on the ice.

On the other hand, it was nice to see Brossoit get some action in the crease. He hasn’t played since his three terrible outings at the start of the year and it’s been a few weeks since he’s touched the blue paint. He last saw game action against the Pittsburgh Penguins where he let in seven goals.

With his good buddy @Patrik Laine not participating in this game, it was up to @Nikolaj Ehlers to score a few extra goals. He did exactly that as he opened the scoring less than a minute into the game. It was a beautiful shot as he received an excellent drop pass from @Jack Roslovic.

He continued his great game with a another goal as he pounced on a rebound in front of the net. Ehlers was at his best in this game as he was utilizing his speed all across the ice and letting his shot go at every opportunity.

You would have never guessed that Winnipeg was struggling with their offense as of late. They scored really early in this one and kept up the pressure throughout the entire first period. They were generating chances off the rush as well as chances from offensive zone pressure. It was an overall strong offensive performance and the Jets could have come away with a few more goals had @John Gibson not made a few fine saves.

On the other hand, the Jets allowed an outrageous number of goals, mainly through poor defensive coverage. The Jets lost battles, faceoffs, and couldn’t get a lucky bounce, especially as the goals piled up in the second period.

Let’s not hang this all on Hellebuyck. We noted above that most of it wasn’t actually Helle’s fault. The Jets looked confused in their own end and it was an absolute debacle in their own end for most of the second period. When dressing a defensive lineup like Winnipeg’s there isn’t much else that should be expected.

The Jets have an abundance of wingers and Roslovic has been the casualty. On most other teams, Roslovic could slot into the top six and help boost a team’s offence. Instead, in Winnipeg, he’s been on the fourth line for some of the season before getting an extended look on the third line with @Adam Lowry and @Andrew Copp.

Now that Laine’s a little banged up, it allows Roslovic to move up once again towards a more prominent role. He looked excellent against the Ducks with tight turns in the offensive end and good reads through the neutral zone.
