#TBT: Oilers Dynasty, Flames First Cup, and More Playoff Records

6 years agoThis week, we look back on the Oilers’ historic dynasty, the Flames’ first Stanley Cup, some Leafs sensations, and other playoff records. Here’s a time warp back to the week of May 25-31 in the hockey world:

May 31, 1994: The Canucks win their first Stanley Cup Final game in franchise history when they beat the Rangers 3-2 in OT in Game 1.

May 25, 1989: Lanny McDonald and the Flames beat the Canadiens 4-2 to win their first ever Stanley Cup Championship.

May 31, 2011: The NHL returns to Winnipeg when True North Sports & Entertainment purchases the Atlanta Thrashers franchise.

May 29, 1993: The Leafs’ playoff run is ended by the LA Kings in Game 7, but Doug Gilmour finishes the playoffs with 35 points, setting a franchise record for most points in a playoff run.
May 27, 1993: Wendel Clark plays a historic game as he nets three goals in Game 6 against the LA Kings in the Conference Final, but it isn’t enough to beat them and they go on to lose the series to the Kings in Game 7.

May 26, 1950: The Leafs hire former star player, Joe Primeau as head coach, who leads them to a 41-16-13 record and a Stanley Cup Victory the next season.

May 31, 1987: The Oilers win their third Stanley Cup in four seasons. Despite Ron Hextall making 40 saves to keep the Flyers in the game, the Oilers get three past him to defeat Philly 3-1 in Game 7.
May 30, 1985: The Oilers beat the Philadelphia Flyers to claim their second Stanley Cup. Kurri scores 19 goals to tie Leach’s record for most goals in a single playoff season and Gretzky wins the Conn Smythe with with 47 points and +28 plus-minus through 18 playoff games.
May 26, 1988: The Oilers win their fourth Stanley Cup in five seasons and start a playoff tradition when they take a team photo with the Holy Grail. Gretzky becomes the first player to achieve 250 playoff points and the Oilers set an NHL record by becoming the first team to win 11 home games in the same playoff year.
May 25, 1985: Three goals in the first period? No problem for Gretz as he helps the Oilers to a 4-3 victory against the Flyers to put them up 2-1 in the series.

May 31, 2002: Hasek sets a playoff record when he stops the 19 shots the Avs send at him, recording his fifth shutout in the same playoff year. He would finish the 2001-02 playoffs off with six shutouts.
May 27, 1995: Paul Coffey becomes the highest scoring NHL defenceman in playoff history when he picks up a goal and an assist to put him at 166 points.
May 27, 1995: Red Wings coach, Scotty Bowman sets an NHL record when he get his 46th career playoff series victory.
