Sharkbitten: IceCaps lose against Worcester

A few months from now, the St. John’s IceCaps might look at this game with a bit of regret. As the season progresses and a playoff spot begins to look somewhat attainable, it’s games like these that will make all the difference in making possibilities into realities. Unfortunately for the Caps, they gave up two points to a team that they’re looking to overtake.
The Rundown
This one didn’t start off very well for St. John’s. Twelve and a half minutes into the game, with newest addition Joel Armia in the penalty box, Gus Young blasted a one timer past Connor Hellebuyck, beating him high glove to open the scoring.
Lightning struck twice as Trevor Parkes scored at almost the exact same time in the second period, beating Hellebuyck with a wraparound. Just a minute and a half later, Bryan Lerg widened the gap to 3-0 with a tap in on a rebound opportunity.
The IceCaps finally put themselves on the board in the third period, as Austen Brassard wristed a rebound off of a Chase Balisy shot into the back of the Worcester net. Unfortunately, that was as close as this game got.
Notes
- Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves on 31 shots; a decent, though overall unspectacular appearance.
- Joel Armia made his IceCaps debut, but didn’t particularly stand out, taking two shots and two penalties.
- Will O’Neill’s assist on the Brassard goal gives him four helpers in two games.
- Eric O’Dell returned to the lineup after missing sixteen games due to injury, and picked up four shots, tied for the team lead with Julien Brouillette.
- St John’s is now six points out of the final playoff spot in the East; a regulation win would have put them within two.
- The IceCaps play their next game against the Sharks this afternoon.
