Is this Evander Kane’s last day as a Winnipeg Jet?

Kane appears to be close to disproving the Westside Story mantra, according to multiple reports. “When you’re a Jet, your a Jet all the way” – at least until your teammates throw your clothes into the shower.

TSN’s Darren Dreger has characterized trade talks between the Buffalo Sabres and the Jets as heating up. The two sides seem to be working hard to consummate a multi-player swap per Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press. Dreger also suggests that Tyler Myers, Zach Bogosian and Drew Stafford could be involved as part of the deal, along with Kane.

Looking at the fundamentals, this deal could be a tidy bit of business for both sides. The Sabres would get a promising 23-year-old power forward who scores at a first-line rate and is injured for the rest of the season – so he can’t help them win games. That’s a critical point for a Sabres club that is intent on pushing for 30th place, an indignity which at least comes attached to 20 percent draft lottery odds.

From Winnipeg’s perpsective, the Sabres have an unrivalled war chest of future assets to dangle – with talented prospects like Joel Armia, multiple first-round picks, a variety of useful depth forwards, and Myers all reportedly on offer. If the Jets are looking for a package that will help the club in their playoff push, and something to bolster their future, the Sabres would appear to be an ideal trade partner. 

It would also appear that the posturing from anonymous league executives regarding Kane’s diminishing trade value was just that. 

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has never made a major trade involving NHL-level pieces, but if he can net decent value in a trade with his back pressed firmly against the wall, that’ll be a major win.
