Numbers Explosion: Scoring Chances, Zone Entries, Pavelec Performance Tracker for 3 Games
A week full of late work shifts, television providers failing me hard, and stupid NHL morning games set me behind this week, but I’ve watched the games, caught myself up, and have all the numbers for you all to read. There won’t be much interpretation today, but enjoy the look back to the week that was.

This game was just ugly. For both sides. The Devils had 96 entries. NINETY SIX. That’s just ridiculous. Yet, less than 50% of those were controlled. The Jets controlled 53% of their entries. That’s excellent. Except for the fact that they still only managed 0.25 shots per entry. That’s horrible. It was a game loaded with turnovers, bad decision making, and missed opportunities. But hey, the Jets won. So I guess that’s good?

Not many Jets did positive things in this game. It comes as no surprise to me that Enstrom was once again the lone defenseman, heck he was the lone player, to finish in the positive in this game. The teams went mistake for mistake, and chance for chance throughout the game, and the Devils were ultimately the team that made the bigger push as the game moved on.

Against the Islanders the Jets were once again able to control a high percentage of their entries. The difference on this night though? Their ability to actually use them to their advantage. They managed to increase their shots/entry total to 0.51, and their ability to generate shots ultimately resulted in a quick burst of goals in the second period. I didn’t think the Jets played the best game on this night, but they definitely improved from their performance in New Jersey.

The Jets have Al Montoya to thank for this one. Although I thought he was fighting the puck a lot to start, if not for him and a quick burst of goals this game could have ended much differently. The Islanders power play completely dominated the Jets, so I hope they had their note pads out. I’m honestly ready to say the Jets did not deserve to win this game. They got lucky.

The Jets bent a little more in their neutral zone control on this…morning? I think the most telling stat about this game though is this: the Jets did not have an entry until four minutes into this game. That’s just bad. I thought they did get better as the game went on, but a terrible power play and painfully slow start will usually cost you games.

The only consistent part of this season has been the team’s poor starts. They managed to battle back a bit once they fell far behind, but when the opponents penalty kill out-chances your power play, you should probably call it a day.
Goaltender Performance
Nov 25th @ New Jersey
Goal | Situation | Why It Went In | Where It Went |
1 | Sustained Pressure | Bad Break (Deflection/Traffic) | Glove Hand |
As a whole, I though Pavelec played well throughout this game. He stood strong as the Devils pressed late, and really was victim of an excellent deflection on the lone Devils goal. I think he could have benefitted by having his glove hand up, but there was a lot of traffic in front of the net, and that was a near perfect deflection by Elias.
Nov 27th @ NY Islanders
Goal | Situation | Why It Went In | Where It Went |
1 | Jets Penalty Kill | Beat Clean (Montoya Fault) | Glove Hand |
2 | Skilled Play | Beat Clean (Montoya Fault) | Five Hole |
I thought Al Montoya had a rather shaky start to this game. He seemed to be fighting the puck off more than usual, and was benefitted by a couple of posts. I wasn’t a huge fan of either goal he let in (I’ve hated on Pavelec for similar plays in the past), but he did get stronger as the game went on. He made some big saves down the stretch and helped the Jets hold on to a regulation win.
Nov. 29th @ Philadelphia
Goal | Situation | Why It Went In | Where It Went |
1 | Turnover | Out of Position | Blocker |
2 | Breakaway | Beat Clean | Right Pad |
Although the first goal resulted directly off of a turnover, I have no idea what Pavelec saw in front of him. He was way way way out of position. Nobody wearing a Jet jersey had a good start to this game, and they really did not deserve a comeback to happen.
