It started slow but the finish was pretty crazy as the Winnipeg Jets managed to overcome a blown third period lead (yes, again) and an early attack against early in overtime, to see Josh Morrissey score the game winning goal to even up the final preseason record to 3-3-1. Bring on the regular season!

First Period

A relatively uninteresting if not somewhat feisty first period as both teams were going through the motions of a final preseason game. @Mikko Koivu tipped home a @Louis Belpedio shot to give the Wild a 1-0 lead but the Jets tied things up moments after on tip-in goal from @Mathieu Perreault on a nice set up from @Josh Morrissey and @Neal Pionk.
Before the goals were scored, there was a dangerous play that saw @Bryan Little injured with what looked a head injury – the Jets later stated “upper body” as he missed the rest of the game.
Shots in the period were 10-8 as it felt like the Jets had the puck more often than not. There were some mistakes made that did lead to a couple of Wild scoring chances, but no goals given up.

Second Period

The two clubs continued to be a bit chippy to each other as there were plenty of scrums after whistles and it started to feel a little bit more like a regular season game than a final preseason warmup.
Except @Mark Letestu was on the Jets top power play unit, which for sure shouldn’t happen in any regular season game.
The Wild took a lead 26 seconds into the period as @Mathew Dumba was given all kinds of room and time to walk in and score on a partly screened Hellebuyck.
After @Anthony Bitetto took the first of his three penalties on the game, the Jets did bounce back with a goal scored shorthanded goal as @Andrew Copp and @Adam Lowry picked up their strong PK work where they left off from last season.
The Wild then got into penalty trouble of their own with two separate minors on the same play that gave the Jets a two man advantage for a full two minutes which Winnipeg quickly took advantage of.
Before the period was up, @Kevin Fiala helped even up the game as the Jets got careless in their own end and left Fiala open on a backdoor play.
The Wild did turn the tables in terms of shots, leading the Jets 11-9 in the second period and evening shots at 19-19 through 40 minutes of play.

Third Period

@Laurent Brossoit as planned started the third period for the Jets in relief of Hellebuyck and was quite good in goal stopping 13 of 14 shots.
The Jets took a lead early in the period thanks to some nice skating by @Ville Heinola who found some space to move and then found @Mason Appleton who scored from distance.
Even with the Jets being out-shot it felt like they had things under control until the very end where they gave up a couple of late penalties, and then with the goalie pulled and a 6 on 4 man advantage, the Wild tied things up after a crazy sequence in front of the Jets goal.
Something something third period lead… something something tied and going to overtime…

Overtime

The Wild carried play for the first 45 seconds of the overtime period as they got a bit of an advantage on the 3 on 3 play as they slashed the stick out of @Josh Morrissey’s hand. The slashed stick ends up backfiring though as Morrissey ended up going back to center ice for his stick at the same time the Wild tried to change. The puck at the same time got loose to center ice and allowed Morrissey and @Blake Wheeler to skate in two on zero and work a give and go to get the puck past @Devan Dubnyk

TL;DR Why The Jets Won

The Jets got a nice supply of offense today and while mistakes were made on the defensive end by the Jets, Dubnyk gave up a few suspect goals of his own. The Jets managed to win it in overtime on the kind of crazy “dumb luck” play you’d expect to see in a 3 v 3 setting.

JetsNation’s Top Gun

Heinola closed out his fantastic preseason with another strong game that saw him pick up an assist and continue to show all the poise you’d expect from a veteran defenseman. The good news is that Jets fans aren’t the only ones who have been impressed with the kid.

Next Up

On to the regular season! The Jets will travel east for the start of a four game Eastern US road swing starting in New York against Jacob Trouba and the Rangers. Puck drop from MSG is 6 pm CST (give or take a few extra minutes for pre-game intros and hype)
