For 20 minutes, this game was all kinds of fun. And then it stopped being fun.
Bad turnovers, undisciplined play, questionable officiating that led to more undisciplined play and some strong goaltending from Pekka Rinne did in the Winnipeg Jets on this night as they fall right back to .500 after a 3-0 loss in Nashville.

TALKING POINTS

  • Fantastic pace to the game in the first period as was expected between the Jets and Predators. Lots of back and forth action and entertaining as all heck even without any goals in the first frame. shots were 12-11 in favor of the Jets.
  • It’s a bit of a shame that Connor Hellebuyck only finishes with a .900 save percentage in this game because he deserved so much better and was the reason the Jets came out of the second period only down 1-0.
  • A lot of the talk over the next couple of days will be the penalties in this game and especially in the second period. The Jets were shorthanded eight straight times – six of those in the second period and a couple of them were 5 on 3 power plays for the Jets. Yes, the officials seemed hyper sensitive in calling some of them while not bothering to call Nashville on the repeated little pick/interference plays that they get away with, but at the same time the Jets didn’t do themselves any favors. Blake Wheeler dropping his gloves will and should get called. Jacob Trouba cross checking someone while they are down on the ice is an automatic call. Tyler Myers slow clapping the officials – while a little bit hilarious – is just asking for a call (even though at that point maybe the officials can turn a blind eye to an obviously frustrated team. Your mileage on that one may vary) – Bottom line, the Jets continue to play undisciplined hockey far too much early on in this season and it absolutely ruined the flow of this game and their play.
  • The Predators punished the Jets for some careless turnovers in this game. Ben Chiarot was far too hopeful in his almost blind cross-ice attepemt to Dustin Byfuglien (who was already at the end of a long shift) and Ryan Hartman read it like an NFL cornerback and easily picked it off. The Preds second goal also came off a turnover in the Jets offensive end and was again at the end of a shift for a few guys who went off for a change instead of following up on the play.
  • Few sights in sports are stranger to witness than Nik Ehlers in a fight.
  • We really have to wait until January for another one of these games? That seems a bit unfair.
