JNGD.S8.G62 Flight Plan: Doan You Forget About Me
The Winnipeg Jets are in Arizona tonight to take on the Coyotes, and by an amazing coincidence the Coyotes are retiring the number 19 in honor of Shane Doan who played his entire career as a Coyote except for that one season he was a Jet – albeit not the current Jets but the first iteration of the club – which is more than enough reason to once again link the two clubs in this weird sort of “you’re not the Jets but you’re the Jets and honestly no one really cares that anyone links the two versions of Jets together, just remember you’re not those Jets but it’s cool if we all keep bringing up past Jets history anyway.”
It’s exhausting really and the only thing that will even make this sort of worth it is if the Jets (the current Jets) come out in retro 90’s style DOAN jerseys as a tribute to a guy who never played for the franchise but had one season in Winnipeg anyway.

Coyote Player To Watch
#9 Clayton Keller – Center
After a strong rookie season that saw him score 23 goals and place third in Calder trophy voting, the 20 year old center was expected to lead the Coyotes offense going into year two and in that respect he technically has done that as he leads the team in assists and points, but he’s also gone the last six games without a point and hasn’t scored a goal in over a month. No doubt TV broadcasters are obsessing over his body language every time one of his shots goes wide, while local “hockey experts” feel he should be traded.
Keller had a two goal game against the Jets in Winnipeg back on October 20 in a Coyotes loss.

Last Coyotes Game
Arizona got two quick goals in the third to take a 2-1 lead but the Canucks tied it up late to force overtime where Alex Galchenyuk scored the OT winner to give the Coyotes a road victory and a much needed extra point in the wild card chase.

Coyotes Notes
- Tonight;s game starts a critical seven game home stand for the Coyotes even though they haven’t been the strongest at home this season. The good news is their play has been better as of late as they’ve won five of their last seven games.
- Don’t let Darcy Kuemer’s season numbers fool you, since January 1, he has sported a 11-3-3 record with a .922 save percentage.
- “Decisions to be made on impending free agents” (Howlin’ Hockey) – The Coyotes are competing in a wide open (aka: bad) Western Conference wild card race and could really use a playoff run having missed the post-season over the last seven seasons. All of that of course complicates the fact that Arizona has ten free agents to consider re-signing this summer and some of them could be used as trade bait tomorrow.
- “Shane Doan’s Arizona Coyotes life was about making a home, rather than a name, for himself” (AZ Central) – Shane Doan leads the Coyotes/Jets franchise in games played, goals, assists, points as well as four other major offensive categories and has done so while embracing life as an Arizonian.
Jets Player To Watch
#27 Nikolaj Ehlers – Left Wing
the Jets wanted to take their time and not rush the dynamic Dane back into the lineup too early at the risk of re-aggravating an injury, but a combination of persistence from Nik that he was ready to go, mixed with a hint of despiration from a club that had spent the last two weeks dealing with some brutal losses to teams they shouldn’t have lost to, lead to a surprise apperance in the lineup on Friday night against Vegas where Nik instantly went to work scoring the game’s opening goal. It was a relief for Jets fans as well as Nik himself who hadn’t scored since December 20 when he had maybe the oddest hat trick ever.

Last Jets Game
Nik Ehlers returned from injury, scored the game’s opening goal and it might not be a coincidence that Patrik Laine also scored twice to break his super long goal scoring slump as the Jets won in Vegas for the first time in their fourth attempt, beating the Golden Knights 6-3.

Jets Notes
- The Jets went 17-4-2 against Pacific division teams last season and this season isn’t any different as they are currently 12-3-2 against Pacific Division opponents this season. They’ve also won seven of the past nine games.
- Winnipeg’s last action against the Coyotes was early in the season on October 20 where they beat the Coyotes 5-3 although the score was a bit misleading as the Coyotes played exceptionally well that night. Laurent Brossoit was the starter in that game as well as he made 42 saves.
- Dustin Byfuglien and Joe Morrow remain out with injury. Blake Wheeler and Dmitry Kulikov will play even though they skipped yesterday’s skate.
