The Winnipeg Jets defeated the New York Rangers by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night. They got off to a great start as Scheifele scored twice in the opening frame to put the Jets out front. The Rangers climbed back and scored three straight goals, two on the powerplay, to give themselves a lead early in the third. The Jets got a spark later in the period as Morrow tied the game at three. Copp was able to net the winner less than two minutes later as the Jets start their homestand on the right foot.

First Period

In the first game back after a tough road trip, it was important to get off to a quick start and forget the past few games. They did exactly that as Scheifele opened the scoring just five minutes into the game. It was one that Lundqvist certainly wanted back as it squeezed through his five hole from a bad angle.
From there, the Jets continually controlled the play and peppered Lundqvist with a ton of shots. The forecheck was strong, and the defense were making smart pinches to keep the puck in the offensive zone. The Jets were able to kill off a Chiarot penalty and then scored on the very next shift as Scheifele lit the lamp once again. It was a great rush by the top line as Scheifele carried it in and sniped it past Lundqvist for his second of the game.
Despite the 2-0 score, Lundqvist was fantastic in the first period. He made a few highlight-reel saves and kept the score close even though Winnipeg fired 19 shots on goal.

Second Period

Since the Jets had such a solid start to the first period, the Rangers decided to do the same in the second. New York managed to score in the first minute of the period as Zibanejad scored from a bad angle. It tipped off the skate of Trouba and past Hellebuyck who couldn’t adjust in time.
The Rangers had a few more strong shifts before the play started to even out once again. The Jets had their first powerplay of the game later in the second but they were unable to convert. The top unit generated multiple chances but Lundqvist stood tall and denied Scheifele’s bid for a hat-trick.
Both teams traded chances for the rest of the period before Byfuglien took an elbowing penalty near the end of the frame. The Rangers were able to keep possession for the entire powerplay and ended up scoring with a nice deflection in front.
Heading into the third, the score is tied at 2. The Jets were better in the first, but the Rangers were better in the second.

Third Period

The Rangers began the third period with a powerplay and they were able to convert once again. It was credited to Zibanejad although the puck took multiple deflections, last hitting Morrissey, before it got past Hellebuyck.
With the Rangers now leading for the first time in the game, the Jets needed something to go their way and change the momentum. That swing came from Dustin Byfuglien as he made a dandy rush into the offensive end with a great deke. The play continued in the Rangers end and Joe Morrow was able to blast one through Lundqvist to tie the game.
With the momentum back in Winnipeg’s favour, the fourth line came out and scored the go-ahead goal. It was a great hustle play from Lemieux who won a race and sent the puck out front. Copp was the trailing player who slammed it home to give the Jets a 4-3 lead.
From there, the Jets were able to close out the game and played some great team defense as the minutes wore down. They weren’t able to hit the empty net, but it didn’t matter as they came away with the victory.

Talking Points

Mark Scheifele continues to be sensational as he scored the first two goals for the Jets. He’s quietly working his way towards the top 10 in league scoring and it seems that he doesn’t quite get the recognition he deserves.
The Jets defense looked active in the offensive zone. They were pinching when needed and helped keep the puck in frequently. When the defense is active, it adds another layer to the Jets forecheck.
The powerplay is still struggling although they are starting to generate chances. They got set up a few times during the game but weren’t able to find the back of the net. I like the idea of having Scheifele in Laine’s spot. It opens up more options because Scheifele has better control with the puck. He can work it down to Connor or play give and go with Byfuglien better than Laine can.
