The Winnipeg Jets were victorious over the Anaheim Ducks with a 4-3 overtime victory. This was a back and forth affair that had the Ducks getting off to an great start, only to fade throughout the game and lose in overtime. Despite trailing by one heading into the third, the Jets battled back and were able to score the tying goal with only five minutes left and the winning goal with eleven seconds left in overtime.

It was a rough start in Winnipeg as the Jets had trouble in the early going. There were plenty of turnovers and mistakes in the defensive end which lead to the first goal by Anaheim. There was extended pressure in the Jets end and the Ducks were able to get a line change in. It was Gibbons who fired the shot on goal, which deflected off Chiarot’s foot and into the top corner past Hellebuyck’s glove. It was a weird goal as Chiarot was falling at the time and had no idea where the puck was.

The Ducks kept coming as they are looking to win their first game in nearly a month. They scored a nice goal on a three on two where the Jets got caught confused on their switches. This also came just after a 2 on 1 for Winnipeg as Scheifele nearly tied the game off a rebound.

The Jets had a few powerplays in the first period as well, but the Ducks were able to defend them well, until the final minute of the period. Wheeler was having trouble passing out of his usual spot along the half wall, so he decided to shoot the puck instead and found an opening on the short side of Gibson. This cut the lead to one heading into the second period.

The first period was all about Gibson as he made a few key saves on the Jets during multiple odd-man rushes. In general, the play was fairly even as both teams scored and each had a few more chances to go along with it.

Laine! There’s no doubt that Laine has been struggling over the past few weeks. He’s found it tough to score and can’t seem to catch a break. He was finally able to find the back of the net as Little gave him a nice pass on a two one rush. Hopefully this kickstarts his play and he can get back to his scoring ways.

The game settled down once the score was tied at two as both teams were looking for the go ahead goal. It was Anaheim who found it as Cogliano scored from the goal line as the puck went right through Hellebuyck. There didn’t appear to be any room under Hellebuyck but the puck somehow got through as the Ducks took the lead heading into the third period.

Down by a goal heading into the third, the Ducks were content to sit back and defend for the period. Usually that strategy doesn’t pay off as it’s tough to defend for so long in the NHL. The Jets proved that by scoring with five minutes left in the third period. It was a point shot from Chiarot that bounced off a Ducks defender and past Gibson.

Beyond that, Gibson was fantastic as he made a few phenomenal saves and kept it a tie game as the time wore down. With the game knotted at three, it was off to overtime.

Hoo boy, that was a crazy few minutes. With end to end rushes and highlight reel saves, this overtime was arguably the best we’ve seen this season. Both Gibson and Hellebuyck were standing on their heads and it seemed as though we might need a shootout to finish this game.

However, Trouba and Little didn’t want to go to a shootout so they decided to end the game on a mad scramble in front of Gibson. A two on one turned into a scrum and Little was able to slam home the game winner with only seconds remaining.

Laine got one shift with Wheeler and Scheifele in the first period (Connor just finished a PK shift) and it had many people wondering how it would look for the rest of the game. Unfortunately for the excited fans, Maurice went right back to Connor in that spot the next shift.

Bryan Little has been playing well as of late. He set up Laine on a rush in the second period and is involved in the play nearly every shift. To top everything off, he scored the overtime winner on a scramble in front of the net. The entire second line appears to be gaining some traction as they had a number of good shifts in the Anaheim end.

Hellebuyck had an up and down game. He looked a bit shaky on the Ducks’ goals but also had some great saves near the end of the game to give the Jets a chance to win. It’s been like that all season as he’s still struggling to find consistency.

The fourth line for the Jets needs to get revamped. They struggled all night with getting into the offensive zone and Lemieux also had a couple of needless penalties.

Jets: Bryan Little – With the assist on Laine’s goal and the game winner, he was the clear choice for Winnipeg.

Ducks: Carter Rowney – Rowney finished with three assists as he helped on all three Ducks’ goals.
