JNGD.S8.G44 Recap: Brossoit Proves Worth In Jets 4-2 Win Over Detroit

It wasn’t pretty (and man have we said that too many times this season) but Winnipeg earns a hard fought 4-2 win over a Red Wings squad that didn’t fare much better than the Jets did. The injuries to the defense are starting to show as it was clear that both Byfuglien and Myers were missed.

FIRST PERIOD

One goal very early and one goal very very late for the Jets and in between that, the Jets had a narrow edge in shots 10-9 in the first 20 minutes of play, but in terms of high danger chances the Jets had five high danger chances while limiting the Wings to just one. It wasn’t a dominating period for the Jets, but it was certainly better than anything Jets fans saw the previous night against the Wild.

SECOND PERIOD

The Red Wings play little by little in the second period started tilting the ice in their favor as they out-shot Winnipeg 15-9. The Jets did manage to take advantage of some 4 on 4 play early in the period as Bryan Little’s goal made it 3-1 and gave him 500 career points. Detroit got that right back though as the Jets give up a short handed goal for the second game in a row. Playing at even strength, the Wings were the better team as they continued to apply pressure after the 3-1 goal, but the Jets again are guilty of not skating as quickly as expected.

THIRD PERIOD

The ice remained tilted against the Jets for much of the third period. A pair of Winnipeg penalties did not help matters and things got a bit more nerve wracking when Dennis Cholowski scored a power play goal about six minutes in to cut the Jets lead to one. The Red Wings finish the final two periods with a 6-2 edge in high danger scoring chances and close out the third period having outshot the Jets 11-8 in the final frame for an overall 35-27 shot advantage, but a Kyle Connor empty net goal with a minute left in the game seals up a shaky victory for the Jets.

THE GOOD…

Brandon Tanev is so much fun to watch. not always the most fundamentally sound player on the ice, but as has been noted so many times, his hustle is almost unmatched by anyone else on either team.
Perreault’s return.
Brossoit was solid tonight and made some key stops late in the second and early in the third to keep Winnipeg ahead. This has to be considered a bit of a statement game on his part and if Paul Maurice and the coaching staff can’t get him into more games after he’s proven to be as reliable as he has been, then serous questions need to be asked as to why.
Kyle Connor with a three point night as the top line was leaned on heavily yet again and had a decent rebound night
The only other line worth noting right now for overall decent play is the Lowry/Tanev/Perreault line as they gathered the second most minutes for the team behind the number one group.

THE BAD…

As good as the Jets first and third(?) lines have been, it’s proof that Maurice needs to shake this lineup a bit. The fourth line is largely ineffective and as we’ve noted, Laine needs help on his line.
Giving up short handed goals always sucks, but giving up a 2 on 0 rush the other way while having the man advantage is all kinds of messed up and should not happen to a team with the kind of expectations the Jets have. It was actually the second 2 on 0 rush they gave up in the game, the first taking place in the first period ended as a missed shot.
The Red Wings defense on all three of the Jets goals. Help your goalie out a little would ya?

THE UGLY…

Be angry at Darren Helm all you want for that hit, but that’s also partly on Perreault who turned at the very last second and put himself in that position to be hit in the numbers into the boards.
The Jets play after the first period. Flat out awful and uninspired.
The fourth line of Lemieux/Appleton/Copp was not good at all and out played pretty much every shift they took.

THE BOXSCORE

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Detroit: Dennis Cholowski – For no reason other than scoring a goal because it wasn’t like the Wings were really that good, it just felt like the Jets played down to their competition tonight.

For Winnipeg: Laurent Brossoit – 33 saves, .943 save percentage and was the only reason the Wings didn’t sniff a lead the entire night. PLAY HIM MORE YOU COWARDS.
