Both the Jets and Edmonton Oilers are 5-1-0 so far in December which is tied for the second best record in the NHL, they will meet tonight for the second of three contests this season as the Jets look to avenge a blown three goal lead back on October 16 that resulted in a 6-5 OT loss and at the same time halt the Oilers four game winning streak.

Edmonton Oiler To Watch

#93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Center

It’s incredible to think that a team like the Oilers who – save for one good season – have been such a bottom feeding NHL club would feel like players as talented as RNH are expendable. 24 goals scored last season in 64 games played and he’s already at 10 this season in 31 games played and his presence on the Oilers second line is the only thing that prevents teams from loading up to focus on just McDavid on the first line.
Yet, in recent days – even with the Oilers starting to do well and maybe seeing a little bit of hope on the horizon, you realize that the Oilers are still the Oilers and will find a way to ruin the best things they have going for them.
Nuge is only one of four forwards on the Oilers to have more than 15 or more points this season (for comparisons sake, the Jets have six) and he has scored goals in three of his last four games.

Last Oilers Game

Mikko Koskinen was sharp early as the Avs peppered the Oilers with a bunch of rubber and the Oilers were able to cash in on the scoring chances they had. A crazy third period saw the Avs threaten to come back a bit, but the Oilers held on for a 6-4 win.

Oilers Notebook

OilersNation: Oilers activate Caggiula, place Klefbom on the IR and reassign Marody to Bakersfield The injury to Oscar Klefbom has left the Oilers scrambling to fill the hole left by their best defenseman.
Edmonton Sun: Edmonton Oilers turnaround looks like more than just a temporary spike Yet again springs eternal in Edmonton as it does whenever the local hockey club looks somewhat competent.
  • On the injury front, defensemen Oscar Klefbom (hand), Andrej Sekera (Achilles) are out as are forwards Tobias Rieder (upper body) and Drake Caggiula (hand)

Winnipeg Jet To Watch

#17 Adam Lowry – Center

Son Of Dave is one point away from 100 in his NHL career and it’s still a little bit amazing at times that he is still a Winnipeg Jet when you consider that two short seasons ago he was practically on everyone’s short list of players that should be offered up to the then expansion Vegas Golden Knights.
His scoring numbers have dipped a slight bit this season as he’s become primarily the team’s go-to defensive center, but four of his last six games have seen him be a bit moe agressive with scoring chances with three registered shots on goal – he had gone 12 previous games managing one or no shots at all – and while the offense is starting to come around, he’s remained a steady presence on a Jets third line that has seen it’s share of different linemates over the last few weeks.

Last Jets Game

The Jets had their best first period of the season against Chicago and raced out to a 4-0 lead before seeing the Hawks fight back a bit but not enough Winnipeg cruised to a 6-3 win.

Jets Notebook

  • Tonight is the first game in a back to back set that will see the Jets host Edmonton and then fly off to Chicago tomorrow night to play the Blackhawks. It’s the fifth of ten back to back games the team will have this season and so far they’ve posted a record of 3-1-0 in the first games.
  • The Jets are six for 11 on the power play in their last two games. Granted those games were against Chicago and Philadelphia – two of the worst penalty killing teams in the league this season – but Edmonton isn’t faring much better when down a man this season either with a very pedestrian 77.32% which puts them currently 23rd in the league.
The Athletic ($): A third of the way through their season, the Winnipeg Jets get their report cards – Murat Ates breaks out the red pen and hands the Jets their grades, at around the 30 game mark of the season.
  • Injuries stay the same for the Jets. Defenseman Joe Morrow is out with a lower body injury and Forward Andrew Copp is out with an upper body injury.
