Another blown third period lead? A lead of three goals going into the third and ther lost? Ridiculous!

Wait, the Jets were the ones doing the comeback thing this time and not the other way around? Splendid!

Last night’s game against the Devils was a sluggish one for the Jets who didn’t manage to muster a single shot on goal until halfway through the first period.

Tonight wasn’t like that at all. It was the Jets that had all kinds of jump to start the game peppering the Rangers goal early and often with shots. The only problem was Henrik Lundqvist was in goal tonight and he decided to make things very difficult for the Jets offense. But the Jets were getting some good looks.

The Jets also had the benefit of three New York penalties called in the first fifteen minutes as the Rangers were not their typical disciplined selves on the ice, but each of those three times the Jets couldn’t cash in and it was right after the third penalty kill that the Rangers struck first.

The Jets have been vulnerable to allowing the backdoor passing play all season and it really was on display here as the Jets got caught too deep as the power play expired and three white sweaters were not able to stop the pass.

The period ends 1-0 Rangers, but with the Jets holding a 11-4 edge in shots with is still frustrating to type well after period has passed.

More of the same as the first period. The Jets overall were the better team, they had more shots than the Rangers did (13-7 in the second) and all 13 shots were listed as actual scoring chances, but they just couldn’t beat Lundqvist.

Meanwhile on the Jets end of the ice, poor defense and goaltending kept rearing their ugly heads as the Rangers added two more goals in the second half of the middle frame.

Of the three goals Hellebuyck had allowed, it’s tough to argue he could have done anything on the first and third goals against. Maybe cheat a little more to the middle of the net on the first goal in anticipation of a cross ice pass? He could have come out a little more on the third goal to try and limit how much space the deflection could have gone to, but those little adjustments may not have mattered.

That second goal against though? That’s one he’d probably like to be positioned a little better on.

Either way, it didn’t seem to matter if Hellebuyck allowed just one or gave up one hundred. Nothing seemed to be going past Lundqvist on the other end of the ice.

A PUCK GOT PAST LUNDQVIST!!

A long journey starts with but a single step and the Jets power play finally got things going two minutes into the third period.

The goal gave the Jets a little bit of hope as they again started strong leading up to Brendan Smith taking his second penalty of the night which results in the power play goal and then two minutes later the Jets fourth line were finally rewarded for their good work.

Paul Maurice may have finally found a fourth line he likes as the combination of Jack Roslovic, Mathieu Perreault and Mason Appleton got regular turns on the ice all game including some late shifts into the game. Maurice is still clearly leaning on his top six, but down a couple of goals and still seeing ice time is very encouraging for fans of the fourth line.

Down a goal with plenty of time left, it felt like the Jets had a chance, but Lundqvist continued to be a standout.

Then with 2:30 left in the game and the Jets thinking about pulling the goalie for an extra attacker, Nik Ehlers and Bryan Little decided to skip that part and go directly to the moment they tied things up.

The kicking out of a rebound directly to Bryan Little was really the only mistake Lundqvist made all game and it was a costly one.

With things evened up and a point earned by both sides, the Jets for the second time in as many nights played a frantic overtime.

Hank. C’mon Hank. Stop this. And by “stop this” we mean stop stopping pucks like this.

The Jets dominate overtime with an 8-2 shot advantage, but can’t beat the King.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

For Winnipeg: Mark Scheifele – Who else? It’s a shame that shootout goal will not count towards his totals. Still keeps his points and goal scoring streaks alive though.

For New York: Henrik Lundqvist – Who else? It wasn’t just that he made 39 saves, it was how difficult some of those saves were that he made look very routine.
