JNGD.S8.G26 Flight Plan: Jets And Rangers Meet Up And Defense Again Might Be Optional
The Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers as of late have had issues with their team defense and while the Jets have managed to keep their head above water despite it, the Rangers have seen a handful of their games sunk by it. The Rangers at least have had the luxury of Henrik Lundqvist in goal and he continues to be a standout at the age of 36. The Jets meanwhile will go back to Connor Hellebuyck who has struggled at times this season behind a somewhat leaky Jets defense.
This could be a bit of a high scoring affair this afternoon at MSG.

Jets Notebook
- Maybe instead of trying to lead after 40 minutes of play, the Jets should instead just look to be tied as the second period ends. Winnipeg is now a perfect 6-0-0 this season in games where the score is tied after two periods of play.
- The Jets are 1-2-0 so far in second games of back-to-back sets like this game is today in New York. Last season the Jets were 4-4-1 in the second game. After tonight, the Jets will have six more back to back sets left in the season.
- Mark Scheifele has a four game points streak, but even more impressive is the fact he’s gone back to back games with two goals in each and the last three games have all been multi-point games for number 55. Blake Wheeler has a three game points streak. Patrik Laine has yet to score in the month of December, should we be concerned?
- Winnipeg has enjoyed their time at the World’s Most Famous Arena recently as they are 4-1-0 in their last five trips to MSG. Last season the teams split their two game season series with the Rangers stealing a 3-1 win in Winnipeg last February before the Jets came in to New York and saw Steve Mason shut the Rangers down 3-0 as Patrik laine scored a hat trick.
- The Jets have allowed 26 goals in their last six games – 4.3 goals a game – and have given up three or more goals in each of their last seven games. Connor Hellebuyck has given up three or more in his last five starts.
- Adam Lowry is two points away from 100 on his career.
- Joe Morrow is still out with an lower body injury while Dmitry Kulikov is still out with an upper body injury. Both have been skating with the team and could still make an appaerance in the lineup before the Jets road trip ends on Tuesday. Dustin Byfuglien remains out with a concussion.

Rangers Notebook
- The Rangers struggled with some bad mental lapses in the second period in a loss to the Montreal Canadiens and have been reeling a bit lately with two losses in a row and four out of their last five games being defeats.
- The second period has been a tough one for the Rangers this season. They’ve scored 27 goals in the middle frame, but have given up 31. (Conversely, the Winnipeg Jets should maybe consider the second their best period having scored 25 goals and only having given up 15)
- Henrik Lundqvist is a career 14-10-7 against the Thrashers / Jets franchise, with a 9.32 save percentage.
- The Rangers have missed forwards Mats Zuccarello, Pavel Buchnevich, Vladislav Namestnikov and Cody McLeod who are all out with injury and have left a young Rangers team with very little forward depth to speak of.
- Ryan Strome had one goal and one assist in 18 games with the Edmonton Oilers. He has two goals and two assists in his last six with the Rangers, having earned a point in four of those six games.
