JNGD.S8.G13 Flight Plan: Hello Helsinki! Jets And Panthers Open Up NHL Global Series In Finland
It’s the first of two games in Finland as the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers have made the trip over the Atlantic and into Helsinki led by their Finnish born superstar – Patrik Laine for the Jets and Aleksander Barkov for the Panthers – and both needing to get back on the winning side of things after a tough loss this past Saturday.
Funny enough, both Barkov and Laine were born in the city of Tampere which is about two hours away from Helsinki.

Jets Notebook
- Winnipeg has won three of their last four games against the Panthers. Last season they suffered a 6-4 loss in Florida back in December 2017 with Eric Comrie taking the loss in goal, but two months later in Winnipeg posted a 7-2 win as Connor Hellebuyck improved to a perfect 3-0-0 against the Panthers, with a .942 save percentage.
- Overall the Thrasher/Jets have typically handled the Panthers pretty well as they are 48-28-13 against Florida all-time, but are only 8-7-0 against the Panthers since the move to Winnipeg.
- The Jets have scored a power play goal in each of the last eight games they’ve played which ties a franchise record that they did twice before back in the Atlanta Thrashers days back in 2006 and in 2010. Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine all lead the Jets with three power play goals each and are also the only Jets to have multiple goals in that category.
- Blake Wheeler has a six game points streak ongoing, with one goal and six assists tallied in those six games. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor have five game point streaks ongoing.
- This is the first time the Jets have traveld abroad for any kind of hockey game, but it’s not the first overseas NHL trip for defensmen Dustin Byfuglien and Dmitry Kulikov who were part of a two game series between the Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks. Buff was a member of the Blackhawks while Kulikov was in his rookie season with Florida.
- MILESTONE WATCH: Scheifele needs just one to earn his 300th career point.
- No major injuries for the Jets going into today’s game as they’ve been pretty fortunate on that side of things early on this season.
Panthers Notebook
- The Panthers haven’t won much this season and they’ve yet to win a game within regulation time. At the very least, they haven’t been blown out in these games as eight of their nine games this season have had a one goal margin. They’ve played in three shootouts this season, winning one and dropping the other two.
- Mike Hoffman has easily been the Panthers best player thus far as he has an eight point game streak and a four game goal streak going into today’s contest.
- The Panthers have actually played in Finland before. Back in 2009 they opened the season against the Chicago Blackhawks. They earned a shootout win in the first game but were shutout in the second.
- Morweena, Manitoba native James Reimer gets the start against the Jets today. He has a career 4-6-1 record against the Jets franchise with an .894 save percentage.
- Keith Yandle not only leads the Panthers in assists, he is currently the NHL’s reigning “iron man” having played in 724 consecutive NHL regular season games.
- On the injury front, the Panthers are without goalie Roberto Luongo (who should be back with the team after their Finland trip), forward Derek MacKenzie and defenseman Mark Pysyk
