JNGD.S8.G10 Flight Plan: All Eyes On Winnipeg
Last year the hockey world got to take a better look at the Winnipeg Jets than they ever had before as a run to the Western Conference Final put them into the prime time spotlight of national TV not only in Canada, but in the US as well. Tonight the Jets make their return to that spotlight in an all-Canadian marquee matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It’s the only such all-Canadian game that will be featured on NBCSN this season (until the Stanley Cup that is where these two clubs shall almost inevitably meet again) and for good reason as the Jets boast (or at least we think they boast, we’re still not sure yet this season) a young, fast high scoring team. The same can be said for the Leafs who came out of the gate on all kinds of fire but have cooled off in the last few games.

Jets Notebook
- This is the last game of a six game home stand that has seen the Jets collect points in each game so far. This is also the start of five straight games against three different Eastern Conference opponents: tonight against the Leafs, Friday in Detroit against the Red Wings, Saturday in Toronto and then off to Finland for two against the Florida Panthers.
- Mark Scheifele’s four point night on Monday – two goals and two assists – was his third such game of his career.
- Milestone watches: Tonight is Tyler Myers’ 200th game with the Winnipeg Jets. Dustin Byfuglien is one point shy of 500 for his career.
- Connor Hellebuyck has yet to lose against the Leafs. He has a 2-0-1 records with a .918 save percentage in four appearances against the Buds. Bryan Little leads the team in scoring when it comes to the facing the Leafs as he has 10 goals and 27 points in 28 games against Toronto.
- The Jets are 6-0-0 when Blake Wheeler has a point in the game. They are 0-2-1 when he doesn’t register on the scoresheet.
- Ben Chiarot’s two goals on the season matches his career high that he set twice over the last two seasons. He also leads Jets defensemen in hits with 16. We are all witness to the “Year Of Chiarot” (Or maybe not, but if we are, we’re trademarking that phrase)
- The Jets mixed up their lines on Monday against the Blues, partly due to necessity thanks to a major and game misconduct given to Brandon Tanev and partly to get some offense going for the club. The most interesting of which was putting Patrik Laine on the top line with Blake Wheeler and Mark Schiefele. That line again was given time on Tuesday’s practice and will likely see action together tonight.
- No major injury news for the Jets. Blake Wheeler did take a ‘personal day’ on Wednesday but is expected in the lineup tonight
Maple Leafs Notebook
- Auston Matthews started out on fire this season but has cooled off a bit lately as he’s gone goal-less in his last three games and without a point completely in the last two.
- Nazem Kadri has outright struggled this season going goal-less in his first nine games. Kadri had scored 32 in each of the previous two seasons played.
- William Nylander still remains without a contract and as you can imagine with the Leafs recent two game slump, Toronto fans have handled this impasse very reasonably.
- The Leafs as well have no major injury concerns going into tonight’s game
