Don’t cry because it’s over… Smile because it happened.

TALKING POINTS

  • * sigh *
  • I’m sure many will talk about the three lineup changes Paul Maurice made before the game. Chiarot and Copp being taken off made sense in some ways, Enstrom not as much. All three were called “coaches decisions” but I suspect we’ll hear that Enstrom had some sort of ailment or injury that requires surgery in the next day or two. Otherwise it’s likely a tough end for 33 year old Toby who likely sees his last game as a Jet in the press box.
  • Game five was just more of the same as we’ve seen the last three games previous. Early Jets penalty taken? Yup. Early(ish) goal against to fall behind? Of course. Not able to properly deal with Vegas’ quick and almost unforgiving fore-chceck? Check.
  • The Jets did better in game five than they had all series in getting pucks towards the net, but it still felt like they didn’t attack it as much as they could have… Is that possible? With the man advantage especially, it would have been better to see them take more shots and get them ON net instead of a foot or two away from it.
  • Connor Hellebuyck after taking a few days worth of grief turned in an exceptional performance when his team needed it. A .938 save percentage is quite amazing and it’s so satisfying to see him finish as strong as he did. Marc-Andre Fleury was simply better and that’s not a shameful thing to say or admit when you’re talking about a three time Stanley Cup champion who is on his way towards a fourth and most likely a hall of fame call if that happens (or even if it doesn’t at this point)
  • There is going to be a lot to break down over the next few weeks of where things went wrong for the Jets which is a bit of a discredit to how good the Golden Knights were in this series. Yes, the Knights were fortunate at times, but I think a lot of it can be chalked up to the adage of “they made their own luck” .. They were very active with sticks, they equaled if not were better than the Jets in the speed and fore-checking department, they won the lion’s share of 50-50 puck battles. Vegas in the end was the better team. Not by much granted, but overall they were the better team.
  • What a ride these playoffs have been though right? “Tis better to have loved and lost: Than never to have loved at all”

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Connor Hellebuyck – After all the talk about if he had played too much, if he was struggling with self confidence, if he was “choking” … He came out with a masterful performance to give his team a chance to win this game.
For Vegas: Ryan Reaves – Screw it, we’re biased to good Winnipeg born hockey boys as well. Not sure anyone would have ever thought he would have scored the game and series winning goal off a double deflection, but here we are.

NEXT FLIGHT

Clean out the lockers – while likely finding out who all was hurt and needs mending – and then move on to what should be a very interesting summer for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
