It was a bunch of Calgary Flames kids and AHLers going up against a mostly NHL veteran Winnipeg Jets lineup, so of course the Jets got the win tonight.

Of course, they didn’t exactly dominate or even play that well and needed a last minute goal in the third to tie before winning it in overtime, but hey, those are minor details, right? A win is a win.

It’s not like the Jets didn’t have chances in the first period – Patrik Laine missed on a couple of different one timers early on, Mark Scheifele had a wide open net to shoot at but was blocked by Viktor Svedberg of the Flames and Kyle Connor completely missed the net off a great set up from Blake Wheeler. The Flames ended up with a slight edge in shots even with the three power plays that the Jets had compared to the zero Calgary were given, and the Flames also ended the first period up 1-0.

Dillon Dube continued his red hot pre-season for the Flames as he sniped to give Calgary a two goal lead. The Jets tried a very interesting tactic of taking as few shots as possible at the Calgary net in the second period and while it seemed a bit unorthadox, Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien each scored to keep the Jets within striking distance.

Hellebuyck remained in the game for the full 60+ but the Flames took Tyler Parsons out of the net and inserted Jeff Glass for a look at him in the third period. A relatively quiet final frame that the Jets were still out shot in, but on a 4 on 3 power play and with the goalie pulled, the Jets tied things up with about a minute left thanks to a tap in goal from Bryan Little.

In what is hopefully an indication that things may be much different this season compared to last, overtime didn’t take long at all as the Jets threw out Scheifele, Wheeler and Byfuglien out to start the three on three extra period and settled things 26 seconds in.

For Winnipeg: Dustin Byfuglien – A pair of goals, a couple of big hits and a ton of ice time – probably too much at 27:10 if we’re being honest.
