Again the Flames and Jets needed overtime after a late third period comeback – this time by the Flames – tied the game up, and again the Jets didn’t need very long in the extra period to settle things as Nik Ehlers punctuated a strong two goal game with a game winning blast to help improve the Jets pre-season record to 4-1-0.

SCORING SUMMARY

HIGHLIGHTS

First Period

Things got ugly kind of early for the Jets as they gave up two goals in the span of one minute 19 seconds as Juuso Valimaki and Ryan Lomberg took advantage of sloppy defensive play to get the Flames a 2-0 lead. The Flames had a 11-6 edge in shots and for a while it looked like it was going to be a long night for a Jets team that looked every part a team that had just gotten off a plane two hours earlier. Sami Niku though gave the team some life at the end of the period by starting a breakout play from his own end of the ice than finished with him zipping a shot past Flames goalie Mike Smith.

Second Period

Much like the night before, the jets took advantage of some early Flames penalty trouble as Nik Ehlers scored on the power play to tie things up less than two minutes into the frame. Both sides continued to play fairly even, pre-season quality hockey (which is to say it wasn’t the most thrilling of games) until Sami Niku got his second goal of the night after some nice work by the TLC line (Tanev, Lowry, Copp) set up the play down low behind the Flames net to give Niku the space to unleash his shot.

Third Period

C.J. Suess tapped home a brilliant Jacob Trouba slap pass towards the net to give the Jets a 4-2 lead very early in the third and for the next 10 minutes after that it seemed like the Jets were content to settle things down and ride out a two goal lead for a win. The Flames though started taking advantage of some lazy defense to make it a 4-3 game on a Mark Giordano goal and then again – just like in the first period – a minute and nineteen seconds later, they tied things up as a Laurent Brossoit clearing attempt landed tight on the stick of Morgan Klimchuk who beat the out of position Jets goalie.

OVERTIME

It didn’t take long for Nik Ehlers to come up with the steal, the streak down the wing and the blast past Smith to give the Jets the OT victory.

JN PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Nik Ehlers – As much as we’d like to give it to Niku, Ehlers had himself a big game in what was a nice response to some of the calling out he’s received over the last few days. He was his line’s play driver and didn’t hesitate to fire the puck.
For Calgary: Mark Giordano – Giordano had a goal and an assist in the game tonight and was easily Calgary’s best and most reliable defenseman.
