The Jets moved right along towards the end of the regular season as they pick up their fourth win in a row tonight, this time a 2-1 effort over the Calgary Flames.

TALKING POINTS

  • There really isn’t much to say about this game. This was a Jets team that felt like it was playing at about 3/4 speed for most of the game. It’s not that they weren’t interested in winning, they just weren’t interested in spending any more energy than they needed to to make sure they didn’t lose.
  • Goals scored off of deflection of blue line shots is just the best so the Jets had two real pretty goals tonight. The Wheeler goal came off a deflection of a Byfuglien wrist shot- a weapon Big Buff has started using a lot more of the last couple of weeks with pretty solid results –  and the Stastny goal was an absolute thing of beauty from the Chiarot fake shot to the split second adjustment made by Paul with his hockey stick to have the puck go roof on Flames goalie Jon Gillies.
  • TSN during the game mentioned that Ben Chiarot would be a 3 or 4 defenseman on other NHL teams? I don’t know if I agree about that, but I do feel he is a touch bit underrated by Jets fans. He’s a decent 3rd pairing option with the tools to be that for a long time, but I feel like his overall ‘hockey sense’ – much like Tyler Myers in his own end of the rink – hinders him in making quick decisions that better defensemen can make.
  • Winnipeg’s defense was still allowing way too much in the middle of their own zone and Calgary had some quality chances in the slot area. It was slightly better than what it had been against Ottawa and Montreal, but not by much.
  • Connor Hellebuyck looked really good in goal tonight and with the win, he tied Tom Barasso for most wins in a season by an American goalie with 42. He’s stated he wants to go for the absolute record on Saturday night and at this point, I don’t see why not.
  • During the game, the Nashville Predators defeated the Washington Capitals to clinch first in the Central, so the Jets will now officially play Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs starting next week. Bring on the Wild!! Our bodies are ready!!!
  • Wait.. there’s one more regular season game to go? Damnit…

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Connor Hellebuyck – 31 save performance in a record tying effort tonight. He looked calm and was square to the puck most of the night. A good sign for next week.
For Calgary: Spencer Foo – Six shots on goal and one first NHL goal for the kid as he continues his strong end of season debut with the Flames.

NEXT FLIGHT

One more regular season game at home it’s against the Chicago Blackhawks as the jets will likely look for a small measure of revenge for that 6-2 loss a little over a week ago. Puck drop for the game is 6:00 PM CST.
