JNGD.66 Flight Plan: Ranger Danger

Game two of the Jets six game road trip takes them to MSG in New York to take on a Rangers team that may or may not be rebuilding, we’re not entirely sure. Their GM says yes, but their latest three game winning streak – fueled by great goaltending – suggests otherwise.
Speaking of goaltending, the Jets get Steve Mason back between the pipes tonight! here is hoping he can provide some much needed relief for Hellebuyck.

Recently for the Jets…

Much like the Rangers as we’ll discuss in a moment, the Jets have won their last couple of games, but it hasn’t been pretty. Except for Patrik Laine and his line with Paul Stastny and Nik Ehlers, they’ve been oh so pretty with all those goals and points tallied up. Connor Hellebuyck has put in some pretty nice work in as well over the last two games with a 30 save performance against Detroit and a 33 save effort in Carolina. Other than that though, the defense is fatigued but the return of Tobias Enstrom which we thought would happen tonight now likely may not happen until Thursday.. maybe… One guy who is returning though is Steve Mason who will get his first start since January 5.

Recently for the Rangers…

Following a seven game losing streak that for sure made them sellers at the trade deadline, the Rangers have had quite the successful run through Western Canada this past week with wins in Vancouver last Wednesday, Calgary on Friday and Edmonton on Saturday night. It might be worth noting however that the Rangers have been out-shot in all three of those games, the first two of those two games featuring 50+ save performances by Henrik Lundqvist. The win in Edmonton required strong goaltending from their backup Alexandar Georgiev as well as the Oilers being the Oilers and shooting themselves in the foot. The win streak has put the Rangers within five points of a playoff spot, but at this point the gap may be too big and filled with too many teams in the way of that final wild card spot.

Recently between both teams…

The teams met a little under a month ago and were stone-walled by King Hank as he made 37 saves in a 3-1 Rangers win in Winnipeg. the loss was the third straight the Jets have suffered against the Rangers dating back to November 2016. On the bright side, the Jets in recent seasons have had decent success playing in “The World’s Most Famous Arena” going 3-1-0 in their last four games played there.

Gameday Prediction

The Rangers have eyes towards the future, but someone keeps forgetting to tell Henrik Lunqvist that and he has eyes for the playoffs. This could be a frustrating night if you like the Jets offense. Rangers squeak out a 2-1 win.
