Not every win is going to be pretty and tonight’s Jets win over the Detroit Red Wings sure won’t make the top ten “greatest Jets wins of the 2017-18 season” list. It probably wouldn’t even make the top 30.
But then again – and we’ve mentioned this before this season – good teams find ways to win these types of games and the Jets did that thanks to fine goaltending (especially in the third period) by Connor Hellebuyck and a pair of Patrik Laine goals.

TALKING POINTS

  • That’s more like it for Connor Hellebuyck. yes a .909 save percentage still isn’t quite idea, but considering the defense he has in front of him, we’ll take it. He was big in the third period stopping four really good scoring chances that could have gotten they Wings even in the game.
  • The first 12 minutes of this game was a collective bore and then Matt Hendricks took a penalty and suddenly everything started happening with three goals in the span of one minute and four seconds.
  • Chiarot has such a bomb for a shot, it’s a shame he doesn’t use it more or get set up for it more. He scored his first of the season on his 33rd shot of the season, I would love to know how many of those shows were full on slap shots. I’d wager it’s less than five.
  • The team defense on that third Red Wings goal… WOOF.
  • The overall team defense has been a whole lot of “not good” the last couple of games which is what will happen when you’re missing your top defensive forward, your number one defenseman, and a second pairing defenseman. Myers and Kulikov are ok together, but better when used as a third pairing group. Chiarot and Morrow are fine if either of them are an injury fill in, but when paired together as your team’s third pairing while the previously mentioned Myers and Kuliikov are your second pair… That’s just asking for trouble.
  • Patrik Laine’s shot is flat out ridiculous.
