Very rare is the big fight that has a ton of hype but lives up to that hype. Tonight’s game that was won by Nashville by a 6-5 score on a last minute goal lived up to that hype.
On the plus side, the Jets offense looks amazing and Paul Stastny looks like he will fit in perfectly with the club.
Sadly that’s where the positives end. The Jets defense was suspect all game long and Connor Hellebuyck had his worst performance of the season tonight.
It was a fantastic, crazy game that was maybe a little more offensive minded than we maybe expected. How much fun would a playoff series between these two teams be really? Obviously with better results for the home side needed.

TALKING POINTS

  • This entire game felt like game one of a playoff series didn’t it? Slow first period where it felt like the teams were feeling each other out a bit, crazy second period and a third that a bit more of a tight checking affair but still back and forth.
  • PK Subban when he isn’t playing against your hockey team is fun, engaging, colorful and a dynamic personality. PK Subban when he is playing against your team is just a straight up bitch.
  • Credit the Preds for being a strong resilient team coming back from two two-goal deficits in the game. They are the defending West champs for a reason.
  • I didn’t fully mind the offside challenge that Paul Maurice had in the second period. For one, the Jets still had a one goal lead, it was a relatively close play and you have to be able to demonstrate some faith in your team’s PK and ability to rebound from giving up a goal. It’s worked out in the past, it didn’t tonight. It happens.
  • As mentioned, Connor Hellebuyck was awful. An .813 save percentage and it’s  a bit surprising he didn’t get a hook after the Preds fifth goal, but maybe by then Maurice figured he’d give Helle a chance to “work himself out of a jam.”
  • Paul Stastny is good.

SCORING SUMMARY

GIF HIGHLIGHTS

HOW DID THEY CORSI?

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Paul Stastny – How do we not give it to the new guy after a pair of points – a goal and assist – as well as a ton of face off wins.
For Nashville: Roman Josi – Five assists for the Preds star defenseman. Nasvhille has a good set of forwards, but a lot of times when he is on the ice, the offense runs through and is driven by Josi.

NEXT FLIGHT

The Jets brief two game home stand ends on Friday night when the Detroit Red Wings pay a visit to Winnipeg for a 7 PM CST start.
