Welp, that happened.
As mentioned in the pre-game write up, the Columbus Blue Jackets are pretty, pretty good now and tonight the Jets found out just how far they are from being on their level, losing 5-2.
The Jets were simply not able to handle the speed and aggressive play that Columbus came at them with pretty much from opening puck drop of the game. It kept the Jets pinned down in their zone for lengths at a time and forced multiple Jets turnovers (the final number in the game given by the statisticians is 14, though it felt like much more than that happened in the game) which the Jackets turned into at least two unassisted goals directly off the turnovers and two others that happened as a result of the Jets turning the puck over moments earlier.
Steve Mason got the start tonight – his first start since the two opening games of the season where he was shelled – and didn’t manage to do any better stopping 34 of 39 shots for a .872 save percentage.
At the very least, Kyle Connor had a nice season debut, scoring a goal in the second period.
As always, we welcome your thoughts on tonight’s game in the comments below!
