For 48 minutes, the Washington Capitals were the better team. Then the last 12 minutes happened and the Jets came from down two goals – the game tying goal came short handed and  with 14 seconds left – and then just for funsies, the Jets scored in overtime to win 4-3.
It’s as improbable a win as you’ll maybe see all season.

TALKING POINTS

  • Not that the Jets were overly bad in this game, but they weren’t overly great either. As we’ve mentioned in previous games, the level of calm this team has at times when down a goal or two is a bit unsettling for a fan base not used to it, but after that Bryan Little goal (and the work by Jack Roslovic that led to it) the Jets seemed to find another level of play.
  • The Jets penalty kill remains strong going 2 for 2 tonight and obviously a huge short handed goal with the goalie pulled. I’ve liked the discipline this team has had lately – although that Byfuglien penalty was such bad timing but in some ways, it kept the Jets within one as it helped prevent a Caps empty net goal.
  • Add Matt Hendricks back to the list of injured Jets as he took a hit to the head and left the game in the second period.
  • I’ll have more thoughts on Tyler Myers tomorrow, but safe to say there isn’t a more Jekyll and Hyde type player on the Jets than Myers. He’s still pretty good in the offensive end of things, but two of the Caps goals came mostly due to Myers turnovers in his own zone.

SCORING SUMMARY

GIF HIGHLIGHTS

HOW DID THEY CORSI?

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Mark Scheifele – Two goals, one assist and in the end of that game he (along with Blake Wheeler to be honest) put the team on his back and willed them to a tie and then a win.
For Washington: John Carlson – Scored at the time what we thought was a back breaker of a goal early in the third and was solid on defense all night.

NEXT FLIGHT

Didn’t we just see these guys 10 days ago? The Colorado Avalanche return to Winnipeg for a Friday night showdown with the Jets who will be looking to shut them out again.
