JNGD 23 Flight Plan: A West Side Story

Another three-game winning streak? That is what the Winnipeg Jets are hoping for as they go for a win in San Jose tonight. It would be their third such streak of the season and would put a nice bow on the four-game road trip the Jets are wrapping up.

Jets Regular Season Game #23

Winnipeg Jets (14-5-3)
@
San Jose Sharks (11-8-2)

November 25, 2017 – Puck drop: 9:00 PM CST
SAP Center – San Jose, CA
TV: Sportsnet
Radio: TSN 1290

Recently for the Jets…

They scored early and often and two of the goals scored actually counted for the Winnipeg Jets as they took care of the Anaheim Ducks by a 4-1 score on Friday afternoon. Nik Ehlers scored twice and Bryan Little had three points (a goal and two assists) as the Jets won their sixth game in the last seven and improved their record on this four-game road trip to 2-1-0. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves to improve his record to 12-2-2

Recently for the Sharks…

San Jose has lost three of their last four games, the last of which being an OT loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. While scoring has been an issue for the Sharks pretty much all season, it was their usually reliable goaltending that let them down early as they fell behind 4-1 before rallying in the second period. The game at least saw Joe Thornton pick up two more assists to now tie Joe Sakic on the all-time assist leaders list, and it also marked the first time defenseman Brent Burns scored this season, so despite the loss, positives were to be had in Sharks Territory.

Recently between the two teams…

This is the first of three meetings between the two clubs this season and for Winnipeg, it honestly has to be somewhat better than how last season’s three-game series went against San Jose because it can’t be any worse. In the 2016-17 campaign, the Jets went 0-3-0 including two losses at home. Overall the Sharks have won six of the last ten games these two teams have been in.

Matchup to watch…

Jets PP vs Sharks PK – Winnipeg has the fourth best power play in the NHL sitting at 24.66% and tonight it goes up against the number two ranked penalty kill of the Sharks which boasts a 87.5% mark. The Sharks also don’t like to give up many penalties, averaging 8.7 minutes per game. The Jets power play is going to have to take advantage of the few chances they get with the man advantage because five on five the Sharks don’t score much (only 38 goals scored in even strength), but they also give up less (36 goals given up when playing even strength).

Gameday Prediction

San Jose has been an up and down club so far this season. Some nights they’ll look every bit the part of a strong West conference contender and other nights it’ll look like they are finally overdue for a bit of tanking and a rebuild. San Jose prefers to keep their games low scoring and if they Jets can get on them like they did Anaheim, the road trip home to Winnipeg should be a very happy one: Jets win 4-1.
