JN Flight Plan: Winnipeg Jets At Detroit Red Wings
It’s probably not any fun being a player on the Detroit Red Wings this season, but for a moment let’s consider the Winnipeg Jets and how awkward this week has been for them in playing the Detroit Red Wings. Not only is this merely an “expected win” for the Jets, but most people would expect nothing less than opening puck drop to final horn domination. If the Jets do this for sixty minutes it’s not a big deal because that’s what is supposed to happen against the sad sack Wings.
But anything less and suddenly there is concern. The Jets didn’t look great in the first period of their last game against Detroit on Tuesday and even as the period ran it’s course and Winnipeg ended it leading 1-0, but there was still discontent. “How could the Jets look this bad against THAT team?!”
Win = “Ok fine, *yawn* NEXT!”
Lose = OMGZ THE SKY IS FALLING!!
It’s not easy being the team that’s lost 12 in a row, but it’s not much better being the team that’s playing the team that’s lost 12 in a row because eventually that team will find a way to win a game and you just pray that the night you play them isn’t going to be the night that they figure it out.

Last Red Wings & Jets Game
It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t pretty in the first period when the Jets got off to a really slow start and for a brief moment it looked like the Red Wings would catch them napping. Then it wasn’t pretty once the Jets woke up in the second period with three goals in two minutes and eventually coasted to a 5-1 victory over Detroit.

Fun Red Wings Facts…
- The Red Wings have lost 12 games in a row. They are 0-10-2 in that time and their last win was exactly one month ago Nov. 12 in Anaheim.
- Despite this, the NHL has not publicly stated that they are considering demoting the entire franchise to the ECHL, so that’s at least one positive for Detroit hockey fans.
What They’re Saying…
Despite allowing five goals Comrie played a solid game, relative to his teammates performance. The first goal arguably shouldn’t have counted, and the goals that followed can’t entirely be put on him. There were some big, key saves that stood out. Overall, it was a promising first start for the new Red Wings goaltender.Hopefully he’ll get used to this defense in front of him!
Fun Jets Facts…
- Tuesday’s win pushed Winnipeg to 40 points on the season with a record of 19-10-2. Winnipeg has reached 40 points in 31 games or less in each of the past three seasons.
- The Jets hold a record of 13-3-2 since Nov. 1, which is tied with the Dallas Stars and Washington Capitals for the best record in the NHL.
- @Blake Wheeler tallied his 200th goal with the Jets franchise on Tuesday. He’s the third player in franchise history to reach 200 goals, joining @Ilya Kovalchuk (328) and @Bryan Little (217).
- The Jets have six players on active point streaks, led by Mark Scheifele’s four-game point and goal streak (5G, 1A). Blake Wheeler (2G, 3A) and Kyle Connor (1G, 5A) are also on a four-game point streaks, while Connor also has a four-game assist streak.
- The Jets are 9-3-1 in their past 13 games against the Red Wings and have points in six of the past seven meetings (5-1-1).
What We’re Saying…
So far this season, the Jets have received an All-Star worthy performance from Connor Hellebuyck. The 26-year-old goaltender currently ranks fourth in SV% (.933) and sixth in GAA (2.24) among qualified goalies. Despite these impressive numbers, Hellebuyck has been pestered with shots through the majority of his starts this season.During 15 of his 23 starts, Hellebuyck has faced at least 30 shots on net per game. Meaning, the Jets’ starting goalie has faced fewer than 30 shots through just eight of his 23 starts this season. While the Red Wings were only able to create 17 shots on Laurent Brossoit on Tuesday, their team will likely muster up significantly more shots against Hellebuyck.
