Last Caps/Jets Game

The Captials dominated for most of the game and had a 3-0 lead over halfway through the second period, when the Jets started to claw back and thanks to the goaltending of @Laurent Brossoit and taking advantage of Caps errors, the Jets managed to tie things up and force a shootout before ultimately falling 4-3.

What They’re Saying…

Two years ago, the Caps were in essentially the same position they are in now with 19 games left in the season. Then, MacLellan traded for a key defenseman, the Caps’ veterans focused on committing to a rugged playoff style, and the team rolled into the postseason in excellent health and playing its best.
“Yes, it feels like the same sort of things are happening,” MacLellan said. “We’ve been struggling. You’re thinking, ‘This is not good.’ ”
Then it clicks.
“There’s no switch you can turn on just before the playoffs start,” the GM said.

When Alex Ovechkin takes the ice Tuesday night against the Winnipeg Jets, he won’t be the only Washington Capitals player on the team wearing yellow skate laces. Ilya Kovalchuk will don yellow too becoming the first Capitals player since Sergei Fedorov to wear the lace color along with Ovechkin in an NHL game.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • The Jets play four of their next five games at Bell MTS Place. Eight of Winnipeg’s last 17 regular season games are at home.
  • The Jets are 6-20-3 when trailing after the second period thanks to Tuesday’s third period comeback to force overtime. The six wins are tied for fifth in the NHL and three overtime points are tied for ninth.
  • Patrik Laine played in his 300th NHL game on Tuesday in Washington. Selected second overall in the 2016 NHL Draft, he’s the first player in that draft class to reach 300 games. He’s only missed 11 games during his four-year career. Laine is the only player in franchise history to reach 300 games played before his 22nd birthday.
  • Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is 3-2-1 in six career starts against Washington with a 2.12 goals-against average and .928 save percentage.

What We’re Saying…

As you can see, the Capitals had a ton of chances in and around the crease last game. The Jets only had a fraction of the dangerous chances and that’s one of the main reasons they were chasing the game from the start.
It’s a tough area to fix and something that’s been plaguing the Jets all year. There’s no easy answer, but the dangerous chances will be a major area to watch in this game.
