JN Flight Plan #50: Winnipeg Jets vs Carolina Hurricanes
By Thomas Hall
4 years agoDuring the previous meeting between these two teams, the @Carolina Hurricanes dominated the @Winnipeg Jets during the second period by scoring four of their total six goals in the middle frame. Since that game, the Jets have gone 5-8-2 over their last 15 games.
As for the Hurricanes, their team has won seven of their last 15 games since their victory over the Jets back on Dec. 17. With a victory on the road later tonight, Winnipeg would be able to avoid a two-game series sweep at the hands of Carolina.

Last Hurricanes Game
Just over five minutes into the first period, @Andrei Svechnikov tallied his 19th goal of the season to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless 19 minutes into the middle frame, goaltender @James Reimer failed to control the loose puck leading to an easy tap-in goal for @Anders Lee to tie the game at 1-1.
With zero goals scored in the third period or overtime, the @New York Islanders and Hurricanes went into an eight-round shootout. The winning goal for Carolina came off of @Justin Williams’ stick during his first game back since renouncing his retirement.

Fun Hurricanes Facts…
- Over their 49 games played this season, Carolina is tied for the most wins (21) when they’re the first team to score. However, the Hurricanes and Jets are tied for the ninth-most wins (9) when scoring first since Dec. 1.
- Since the start of the 2017-18 season, the Hurricanes are 83-64-18 with Justin Williams in the lineup. During that span, Carolina is also 27-18-3 without him in their lineup.
- MILESTONE WATCH: Coming into this game, Williams is just one assist away for 20 career assists against the Thrashers/Jets franchise.
What They’re Saying…
As for their performance since Dec 1, the Hurricanes are in the middle of the pack in the NHL with 24 points in that stretch. So while the analytics love this team, they are not enjoying the results that would come with it. Then add the fact that Petr Mrazek is not having his best season. He currently has a 2.64 goals against and a .904 save percentage. That’s not good enough for a team looking to make a deep playoff run.
Last Jets Game
After allowing two goals in the opening frame, Mark Scheifele put the Jets on the board by scoring his 23rd goal of the season. The Jets were also able to prevent the @Chicago Blackhawks from finding the back of the net throughout the entire second period. Despite a late third period goal from @Patrik Laine, Winnipeg was overwhelmed in the final 20 minutes, as Chicago added three more goals and came away with a 5-2 victory.

Fun Jets Facts…
- Over the Jets’ 15 games since Dec. 17, their team has allowed the third-most goals per game (3.67) throughout the entire league. In addition, Winnipeg is also tied for the second-most shots against per game (34.4) during that time frame as well.
- Through 49 games this season, the Jets have scored the fifth-most slap shot goals (23) among all 31 teams in the league.
- MILESTONE WATCH: Coming into tonight’s matchup, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is just 33 saves shy of his 7,000th career save.
What We’re Saying…
The Canes are a fast team both in terms of puck movement and overall skating speed. They are a team that loves to create off the rush and they will jump all over mistakes which is exactly how they took care of the Jets back in December. That game was one of the few games that the numbers would suggest the Jets had that game well in hand (xG was 2.44 to 1.85 in favor of the Jets), both from a standpoint of the Jets limiting how much offense Carolina got, and the chances Winnipeg had to score.
