Coming into tonight’s game, the Jets will be looking to begin 2020 the same way they concluded 2019. In order to ring in the New Year with a bang, the Jets must first win their first of two meetings against the Leafs tonight at Bell MTS Arena.

Last Leafs Game

Following a pair of goals during the opening frame, Toronto extended their lead to 3-0 midway through the second period after Matthews scored his 27th goal of the season. Despite a late second period goal from @Ryan Suter, the Wild were unable to trim the Leafs’ lead any further. As captain @John Tavares added an empty-net goal late in the third, ultimately defeating Minnesota 4-1.

Fun Leafs Facts…

Since the firing of Mike Babcock back on Nov. 20, Toronto is tied for the most wins (13) and they’ve averaged the most goals per game (4.05) throughout the entire league during that span as well.
Through 23 games under Babcock, the Leafs allowed a league-leading 29 goals during the first 20 minutes of play. During their 18 games since then, their team has surrendered the fewest number of goals (10) in the first period.
MILESTONE WATCH: Entering tonight’s game, @William Nylander is just three points shy of his 200th career marker.

What Leafs Nation Is Saying…

It’s amazing how much things can change in just a few weeks. Holl was infamously Mike Babcock’s pressbox staple, making his way into just 11 games over the course of the 2018-19 season while spending the rest watching from the sidelines. Due to injuries on the Leafs’ blueline at the start of the season, Holl found himself an opportunity to prove himself at the NHL level. Still, under Babcock, Holl played only 14:35 game despite showing quite a bit of promise.

With Keefe behind the bench, everything has changed for Holl. He’s now playing nearly 19 minutes per game and he’s emerged as a legitimate top-four defenceman. There was so much talk all summer about finding Toronto a solid, right-handed defenceman, and it seems there was one waiting in the dog house all along. Getting Holl locked up to a deal worth $2 million is a tidy piece of business as the impending UFA’s value was only going to rise as time went along and he played more.

Last Jets Game

In total, there were eleven goals scored during Winnipeg’s latest contest. After an extremely high paced first two periods, the Jets entered the third period with a 3-2 lead over the Avalanche. Connor led the way for Winnipeg in the final frame, by scoring a pair of goals, helping his team defeat the Avalanche by a score of 7-4.

Fun Jets Facts…

Since Jan. 1, 2019, the Jets have produced the second-worst penalty-killing rate (74.9%) along with surrendering the third-most powerplay goals per game (0.71) throughout the league.
During his 63 starts since 2019, @Connor Hellebuyck has generated the sixth-most wins (35), fifth-highest SV% (.919) and the 14th-lowest GAA (2.76) among qualified goaltenders.
MILESTONE WATCH: Coming into this game, Scheifele has recorded at least one point on the powerplay in five of the Jets’ previous eight games. As a result, the 26-year-old is just four points away from his 100th career powerplay point.

What We’re Saying…

These two teams have two of the worst penalty kill units in the league with the Jets PK coming in proudly at dead freakin last with a 71.43% success rate while the Leafs aren’t much better at 75.83% which puts them at 25th overall in the NHL. The Leafs have given up a power play goal in four of their last five games and six of their last eight played. That’s not good of course, but it pales in comparison to the level of sucktitude the Jets have displayed recently. Four straight games having given up a power play goal – and let’s not forget the Jets are still one of the least penalized teams in the NHL, so it’s not like they are giving up that many chances – and for the month of December they only shut down 23 of 36 power plays against which is an awful 63.89% kill rate.
