JN Flight Plan 40: Winnipeg Jets At Colorado Avalanche
The last game of the year and the last game of the decade go down tonight in Colorado as the Winnipeg Jets, who at this time ten years ago weren’t even in Winnipeg take on Central divisional rival Colorado Avalanche, who ten years ago weren’t even in the Central division.
Hockey is kind of crazy sometimes. What is also crazy is both of these teams have struggled a fair bit over the last five games and both sides should be desperate for a win, so we could have some good hockey coming our way to close out 2019.

Last Avalanche Game
Despite a fantastic effort in goal from Philipp Grubauer and a third period lead, the Colorado Avalanche couldn’t close the deal yet again, this time against the Dallas Stars who tied things up in the final frame and then beat the Avalanche in the shootout.

Fun Avalanche Facts…
- Nathan MacKinnon has 458 career points, tied with @Paul Stastny for ninth place in franchise history and fifth place in Avalanche history. His next goal will tie him with @Matt Duchene (178) for eighth in franchise history (fifth in Colorado history).
- Ian Cole has a four-game point streak, one shy of tying his career high (March 29–April 7, 2015).
- Colorado is 10-4-2 in its last 16 games, which included a season-best nine-game point streak (8-0-1) from Nov. 27 to Dec. 13. They are 7-4-2 in December and will finish with their third straight “winning” month after going 8-2-2 in October and 8-6-0 in November. The last time the Avalanche started a season with three straight months above .500 was in 2010-11.
What They’re Saying…
Let’s do some math. If MacKinnon plays as many games as Forsberg, he could record 655 points. At Hejduk games, he’s have 943. In Sakic years, he’d be at 1,274.Please let him play as many games for the Colorado Avalanche as Sakic did for the franchise.

Last Jets Game
Not good. Not good at all. At least the fourth line scored a pretty, hard working goal. That was it for the positives though as the Blues swept the weekend home and home series against the Winnipeg Jets with a 4-1 win on Sunday.

Fun Jets Facts…
- The Jets are 6-4-2 against divisional opponents this season and 14-8-2 against the Western Conference this season.
- road…Winnipeg hasn’t lost consecutive games in regulation on the road this season, but are 1-3-1 in their past five games away from Bell MTS Place and have been held to two goals or less in each of the four losses.
- The Jets have points in 13 of their past 17 games (9-4-4) against the Avalanche, but are 0-3-1 in the past four meetings.
- Winnipeg has played hockey on New Year’s Eve in each of the last six years, the last two NYE games having been played in Edmonton, both wins. Overall the Jets are 4-3-0 on NYE games since moving north to Winnipeg.
What We’re Saying…
The Jets power play has quietly been getting better as we’ve gone along with this season and while there are still some kinks to work out – like Neal Pionk needing to get the puck to Patrik Laine with a little more urgency than “snail speed” with his passes – it’s gone 9 for 32 over the last 10 games. That 28.12% success rate would put it among the league’s best as they’ve managed to score in five of the last seven games played.
