JGD 14: Jets Look To Veto A Senators Win

Last night the Jets rebounded nicely from the debacle in Montreal to pick up a win in Toronto against a pesky Maple Leafs squad. Tonight they find themselves in the nation’s capital trying to pick up their third win in the fourth game of this current road trip and their fourth win in the last five games played.

The Sens come into this contest also playing some pretty good hockey as of late having won three of their last four which includes a 2-1 overtime win against Les Habs on Tuesday night.

Last season the Jets and Sens split their two game season series with a win in each other’s rink. You may also recall the pre-season matchup where both teams iced lineups fairly similar to what they have now. That game saw the Jets rally with three goals in the third and Mark Scheifele scored in overtime to pick up a 4-3 win.

Don’t expect any changes here. Andrew Copp is still out. The forwards didn’t exactly start well against the Leafs but they finished well with a very good third period with plenty of scoring chances and were rewarded in the end. Ladd, Little and Wheeler continue to lead the way.

Stuart and Trouba had a very rough night last night and in the third were even split up at times as Stuart took some shifts with Chariot and Myers and Trouba was out with Myers. This could have been because they were bad together and possibly because Tobias Enstrom didn’t play the last five minutes of the third period. The defense still seems to be an issue as it looks to find consistency this season.

Pavs was in last night, so Hutch should get the start tonight.

Kyle Turris leads the Sens in scoring with eight goals and 13 points and is currently on a four game points scoring streak. The Sens are again without Mark Stone who is second in team scoring but serving the second game of his two game suspension. The top six are a collection of nice talent that can score, the bottom six will not pose such a threat, but can be effective in shutting down top players on the other side.

Perennial Norris Trophy candidate Erik Karlsson leads the way for an other wise underwhelming group of defensemen who can take care of their own end well enough.

Craig Anderson has been hit and miss this season as he gave up five goals against in a little over half a game’s work against Detroit, but came back with a 36 save effort versus Montreal. This game could very will be decided by just which Anderson we see in goal tonight.

Game Day Prediction: It hasn’t been pretty but they don’t give you extra style points in the NHL. Tonight will be more of the same against a hard working Ottawa club. Jets win 3-2.

Obvious Prediction: Last we saw him, Hutch had a night to forget in Montreal although granted not all of it was on him. His last game against Ottawa was also one to forget as he was pulled in the March 4th game against them last season. Tonight as the Jets have a lead after 40 minutes of play, he shuts the door in the third period and doesn’t allow the Sens to get a game tying goal and gets back to winning ways.

Not So Obvious Prediction: Saturday Andrew Copp picked up his first goal, Sunday was Chris Thorburn and last night Burmi got off the schneid with a GWG. Noticing a trend here? We’d be fine if Anthony Peluso was the latest member of the “Bottom six guy unlikely to score for the Jets but did anyway” club!
