JetsNation Recap – That Was A Thing That Happened

Let us keep in mind that tonight was just the first game of pre-season and the Winnipeg Jets iced a lineup that excluding a few players will at best be permanent fixtures on the Manitoba Moose roster in a few weeks, so let’s not get too worked up over the Jets 3-0 loss to the Calgary Flames, okay?
That all said, you’ve probably had dental work done that was probably easier to endure than tonight’s game was.

GAME THOUGHTS

  • It wasn’t all bad out there. Brandon Tanev by far was the best Jet on the ice. He was tenacious, he was very good on the forecheck and a pain to deal with around the opposing net. Those are all great qualities for a bottom six forward to have.
  • Andrew Copp also did well for himself and maybe should have had a goal in the second period but was robbed by a diving Chad Johnson.
  • Assistant coach Jamie Kompon – who filled in for Paul Maurice who is still in Toronto helping coach Team Europe at the World Cup – stated he liked the first two period but felt the team as a whole dropped off in the 3rd which is pretty much accurate. The Jets actually had a fairly strong second period despite the fact they gave up two goals in that frame.
  • Brian Strait – we’re hoping – is in a battle to earn a spot on the Jets roster and hasn’t been just presumptively handed a spot yet. Tonight’s game didn’t help his cause at all. He had at least three turnovers – one on a miscommunication with his goalie that lead directly to the Flames second goal – and was otherwise looking very much like an AHL level player.
  • Eric Comrie was the Jets goalie of choice the entire game and did alright for himself. He still does have a slight issue with rebound control as witnessed in the first goal against, but also stood tall while he was a bit under siege in the 3rd period.
  • JC Lipon as well as the pairing of Josh Morrissey and Paul Postma were also not too bad.
  • Kudos to the Jets and TNSE for bringing in an organ to MTS Centre for this coming season. Hockey games just sound better with an organ.
