Jets Re-Sign Laurent Brossoit To A One Year Deal

The Winnipeg Jets have signed goaltender Laurent Brossoit to a one year deal worth $1,225,000. The deal essentially takes care of the team’s goaltending situation going into the 2019-20 season with Connor Hellebuyck as the incumbent starter and Brossoit having proven himself to be a strong backup option.

Reaction to the signing today will be a stark contrast to what the reaction was a year ago when the Jets signed Brossoit to a one year deal worth half of what he has signed for today. Winning 10 of his first 11 starts in relief duty of Hellebuyck won fans over in a big way and actually had some wondering if he shouldn’t have been getting more starts as the season went along.

Brossoit appeared in 21 games this past season with the Jets and started in 19 of those as he posted a 13-6-2 record with a 2.52 GAA and .925 save percentage last season, highlighted by a 40 save shutout of the Vancouver Canucks just before Christmas.  He did suffer an injury late in the season when he exited a March 21 game against the Vegas Golden Knights but he did serve as the team’s backup through the playoffs with some even wondering if it was worth giving him a chance to start after a rough game two effort from Hellebuyck.

The raise he received today is no doubt a well earned one.

As we noted a few weeks ago, the future of the Jets goaltending kind of depended on just what Brossoit wanted to do going forward. A one year deal makes him an unrestricted free agent next summer and one more strong season as the Jets backup should lead to an even better contract with an opportunity to start on another NHL club. The $1.225 million AAV also gives the Jets really good value for a quality NHL backup goalie and buys a little more time for their goaltending prospects to develop and take Brossoit’s place next season.
