Happy new year! We took a small break from prospect updates as there were only a few games played by the middle of last week. The World Juniors, Matteo Gennaro, and a trade in the QMJHL highlight this update.

World Juniors

Michael Spacek scored the game winner late in the tournament opener for the Czech team, downing Team Finland 2-1. Spacek added a pair of assists the next night in a 4-3 OT loss to Switzerland.
Erik Foley contributed an assist in a win over Russia last Thursday. USA will take on Russia once again on Wednesday in a semi-final matchup.
Jack Roslovic had a pair of assists in a 5-2 win over Slovakia last Wednesday.

CHL

Jansen Harkins and the Cougars lost their first two games of the week after a return from the holidays, but Harkins pushed the team to victory in game three with a pair of goals and an assist.
Matteo Gennaro had the best stretch of games in his junior career thus far, scoring three times and adding six assists in just five games played. Gennaro is scoring well above his career averages in his 19-year-old season and still leads the team in scoring; now by 10 points.
Jordy Stallard potted a goal on Wednesday and an assist last night. Stallard is still tied for second in team scoring with 25 points, but is now tied with Malenstyn and Stukel.
Logan Stanley recorded a single assist against the Firebirds on New Years Eve. Stanley fired a shot through that was tipped and put home on the rebound. He had 11 shots on goal this week.
Luke Green was traded from the Sea Dogs to the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Boxing Day. The Sea Dogs received a 2018 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2018 and 2020. Green got off to a fantastic start with the Phoenix, recording five assists in three games. A quick note for the highlights, Green changed from #55 to #19.

USHL

Mikhail Berdin stopped 24 of 26 shots in an overtime win against Fargo on New Year’s Eve. Berdin has improved steadily since early December. In the six games played in the last month, Berdin has a 4-1-1 record combined with a GAA of 1.63 and SV% of 0.950.

NCAA

Tucker Poolman and North Dakota played a single game over the holidays, a 3-1 win over Union. Poolman recorded a secondary assist on an empty netter at the end of the game. He was held to no shots but was +2.
Mason Appleton and Michigan State played a pair of games in the Great Lakes Invitational tournament this week, both losses. Appleton scored a goal in each game.
Jack Glover played in back-to-back games for the first time this season, but was not a factor on the score sheet.
CJ Franklin and Matt Ustaski had the entire holiday break off, and Erik Foley was busy at the World Juniors.

Overseas

Pavel Kraskovsky continued his 4th line role with Lokomotiv in four games played over the last two weeks. Kraskovsky saw 15 minutes of icetime on the 22nd (close to a season-high) and fired six shots on goal. He was 47% on the faceoff dot.
Sami Niku played a pair of games, recording 10 shots on goal and averaged well over 20 minutes of ice time (season-high 25:12 on Friday). JYP shut out both opponents.
Jacob Cederholm has returned to HV71 following his loan to IK Pantern. Cederholm is credited with playing a single game on the 26th, but it appears he was an extra defenceman and did not see any ice time. He was not in the lineup the following two games.

AHL

The Manitoba Moose played twice at home against Charlotte this week, coming away with 3 of a possible 4 points. The Moose are currently 5th in the Central Division, but have games in hand on most teams. Prior to the games, Ryan Olsen was assigned to the ECHL’s Tulsa Oilers. Olsen had a pair of goals in 17 games the the Moose (Update – Olsen is now back with the Moose).
Kyle Connor scored the opening goal on Friday, just 25 seconds into the 2nd period on the powerplay. Connor was named second star of the game. The Moose would ultimately lose 3-2 in overtime.
The Moose got their revenge on Sunday, winning 4-1 over the Checkers. New Moose Brandon Tanev had a goal and an assist and Brendan Lemieux jammed in a rebound for his 5th of the season.

ECHL

Ryan Olsen picked up his first ECHL point on the game-winning goal Saturday against Wichita with just under 2 minutes remaining. Tulsa would add an empty netter in a 5-3 win.
Jamie Phillips went into the holiday break with a loss, allowing 4 goals on 27 shots. Back from the holidays, Phillips added another two wins on the season with 34 and 36 save efforts.
