Jets Nation Recap: Scoreburn Leads Jets To 3-2 Win Over Coyotes!

The Jets struggled early in the game especially with special teams as they gave up a couple of first period power play goals to fall behind. They didn’t panic however and stuck to their physical gameplan and rallied in the last two periods to beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-2.

That’s a little more like it!

Mark Scheifele got things going early on with a wrist shot that Coyotes starting goalie Anders Lindback got some but not all of to give the Jets the 1-0 lead.

Then Winnipeg decided it needed to practice it’s penalty kill and practice didn’t go so well.

We can argue the validity of the call on Tyler Myers for playing the puck with the glove and bemoan the silliness of the puck over-the-glass penalty that Blake Wheeler took, but the bottom line is those calls happen to all teams at some point and good teams find ways to kill them off without any more damage done.

The Jets didn’t as Shane Doan tipped in a Mikkel Boedker point shot to tie the game, then Connor Murphy also put in a shot from the point to give the ‘Yotes a 2-1 lead.

Ondrej Pavelec was clearly screened on both of those goals against by his own man (both times Mark Stuart) so it’s tough to fault him for the goals and he ended the night with a respectable 20 saves on 22 shots.

The Jets tied things up a little over halfway into the second after a sweet give-and-go play between Andrew Copp and Dustin Byfuglien resulted in a Buff half-slapper in the slot that Lindback had zero chance on.

A few minutes after that a hard charging Shane Doan barreled into and practically through Pavelec who stayed in the game at that point, but left after two periods.

Hutchinson came in to hold the fort in the 3rd period stopping all 7 shots faces.

The game winner came from Chris Thorburn who turned some good hustle and pressure while being short handed into a steal and a goal (albeit an awkward looking goal) that clearly left the Coyotes bewildered, confused and unable to score a goal to tie before time ran out.

Dirty Deed? It’s pretty obvious that Doan clearly had no intent of avoiding contact with Pavs. While a slight shove to Doan’s side by Stuart didn’t help, it likely had no real bearing on Doan’s motion but was a convenient enough excuse for media folks to continue to give Doan the benefit of the doubt in being a dirty player.

As for Pavs, Paul Maurice said not to expect an update until Sunday at least and he was seen leaving the arena with crutches… Hellebuyck on the way?

Penalty Problems: The Jets continue to take very bad and totally avoidable penalties and don’t have quite the ability on the PK to cover those mistakes. Again, you can argue the calls as a bit on the weak side but the truth is they are going to be made and when you have a reputation as the Jets do for being overly physical and a team that plays with an edge, you may get those calls against you more often than not.

Ladd Lacked: Tough night for the captain as he committed four giveaways (and that’s what he was only given by the official scorer.. You could argue he had five or six) and committed his trademark offensive zone stick infraction penalty halfway through the third.
