Where the heck did that come from?
At the start the Kings looked every bit the team that is a strong Pacific Division winning contender and the Jets looked every bit the beaten down and broken club playing out the string.
But as the game went on, something funny happened… The Kings stopped skating and the Jets put on their hustle and hitting pants and ended up stunning Los Angeles 4-1.

GAME THOUGHTS

  • That first period was all Kings and by all rights it should have been 2 or even 3 to 0 for LA after 20, but Ondrej Pavelec was very good and kept things scoreless after one. He kept that strong play up in the second as the Kings kept pressing. He did give up a bit of a stinker on the short blocker side for the game’s first goal about 30 seconds after making a brilliant right leg kick save and it seemed like that was the crack in the dam for him, but he buckled down and ended up posting a .971 save percentage tonight.
  • Just wish we could have that on a more consistent basis from Pavs.
  • The Jets goal to tie things in the second was a nice display of cycle work from Trouba, Thorburn, Halischuk and Lowry that Lowry ended up finishing off for his 7th of the season. His hot streak to close out the season is encouraging for next season.
  • The Jets many times have started third periods rather pathetically, but tonight came out very strong on two very identical plays that resulted in quick goals to get the Kings reeling. Byfuglien with a shot from the blue-line while Ehlers was doing a fly-by screen and then about three minutes later it was Paul Postma with a shot from almost the same spot as Buff and Wheeler with fly-by screen that left Kings goalie Jonathan Quick shaking his head.
  • The Jets actually got stronger as the third period went on. Again, where was that kind of effort all season?
  • Scheifele picked up two assists tonight. He has 47 of those on the season. Is there anyone doubting he’s not a legit 1st line center? Blake Wheeler also had two assists in the game.
  • Jets credited with 25 blocks in the game. They did very well to get themselves in passing and shooting lanes especially in the latter 40 minutes of the game. It almost looked like the Jets of last year with how tenacious they were with defending.
  • Special teams still an issue as always. PK allowed a goal on three chances against, and the power play was 0 for 4 including a lame 4 minute double minor that saw one Jets shot on the Kings goal in the second period.
  • But really – as you’ll see in the corsi chart below – this game was a lot of ugly for the Jets for at least half the game. Just a case of Winnipeg snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
